Indefinite hold films

Hi all,
I compiled a list of all the Mexican films that are on indefinite
hold at my local Family History Center. I can do lookups for any of
you as long as you can give me the date and names you are interested
in. At a minimum, I would need a month and year.
For Joseph: I tried to place the file in the Ranchos 2 website, but
I got an error message. That's why I ended up placing it here in my
folder.

File Management Request

I have a very simple request if we each do our own small part. Or a
large job if I have to do it. I just worked on helping someone in the
group. but with over 50 members I can easily forget which profiles are
which names and thereby not know how to link the genealogies (listed
under the persons name to the person subscribed under a different profile.

here is what I'd like each of you to do:

1) go to the files area

2) if your genealogy is on this page go to the far right of your name
and click on the word "edit"

3) when the window opens in the space called "Folder name" put your
email address next to your name.

4) click "save changes"

5) you're done

look at it and it should look like my folder or something similar to this:

Joseph Puentes' Ancestors makas@...

thanks,

joseph

Ranchos2

Ranchos 2 is up and running. If you are logged on and can access the
files and links area of the original Ranchos group you should be able to
seemlessly go to the Ranchos 2 "file" area by clicking on the "Ranchos2"
link in the links area of the original Ranchos group.

If any of you can't access Ranchos2 via this link well maybe I forgot or
"couldn't" add you email address to the Ranchos2 membership list. If
this is the case email me directly (makas@...) and we'll talk
about it.

thanks,

joseph

Where did they go???

Rosalinda Ruiz, my cousin who happens to be in SLC right now, asked
this question and suggested it for the group to ponder:

Sometimes the people of Huejucar, Jalisco took their children to be
baptised in the church in Huejucar. Sometimes they took their children
to be baptised in Santa Maria de Los Angeles, Jalisco. Before Santa
Maria they took them to Colotlan, Jalisco. But the records in Colotlan
only go back to 1718 and Colotlan has been around since 1591. So where
did the people record their baptisms, marriages, deaths, etc for the
missing 100+ years?

That question is not for the group. . .though if someone knows the
answer I'd dearly love to know.

The question for the group is "Would anyone be willing to participate
in a new 'info file' I'm going to put in the files area of the group?"

in this new info file we would put info like the above from your own
research. "well before this town the people went here to record their
baptisms and before that they went here to record

Suggestion: Reports v. Charts

I have a suggestion and its not a big deal for now if you don't follow it.

I'd prefer any genealogies submitted in the future to be in the
genealogy report format rather than the chart format.

my reasons:

1) the charts eat up space compared to the reports

2) you can get so much more info in the reports

3) the reports can be sent in using .rtf format

thanks,

joseph

San Gil and San Hermenegildo

Hi everyone,

As all of you no doubt already know, oftentimes a baby was baptized with the name of the saint on whose day he or she happened to be born.  I am such an example.  I was born on November 28, so I was baptized and named after St. Stephen the Younger, Patron Saint of Iconoclasts and Numismatists.  My middle name, Francisco, is in honor of St. Francis of Assisi.  I'm sure everyone out there has ancestors or living family members who have names which correspond to the saint on whose feast day they were born.

I say this because St. Gil and St. Hermenegildo were two different saints, have two different feast days, and as such are both two different names.  Gil, and the female form, Gila, are not shortened forms for Hermenegildo.  Hermenegildo could be shortened to Meregildo or Gildo, and a female Hermenegilda, could be nicknamed Meregilda or Gilda.  San Gil's feast day is September 1 and San Hermenegildo's is April 13.  In fact both men were pretty much contemporaries.

Ray and Joseph,

I asked my mother who was raised in Mexico about Gil and Gila, and she said Gil was short for Gilberto and Gila was most likely a shortened version of Hermeregilda, but she was unsure about Gil being a contraction of Hermeregildo (what a tongue-twister) or Mergil.

missing records and family stories

Hello Alice, Joseph and others,

Thank you for your encouraging words. After rereading what I posted
Saturday, I must have been extra stressed out that day. No, civil
marriage certificates from San Francisco do not list parents - that
would have been too easy!

My father, now deceased, had passed down a rather fantastic family
story about his father's side, about two elder brothers getting
together to disinherit a much younger brother and then seeing to it
that important records were destroyed...and then in turn the youngest
brother disinherited his own son (my grandfather).

Very reluctantly, I'm now beginning to believe that this 'fantastic
family story' might be based on fact. Why reluctantly? Because to
most genealogists family stories are just that, stories, and inherently
suspect until proven to be factual. To his dying day my father didn't
believe me when I told him that the tiny, dainty little old lady (on
his maternal side) in the family photograph, the

missing baptismal & other records

Gloria,

Even though you don't have the baptismal information, you apparently know the full names of his parents.  Does your family have a story that they passed down explaining why his parents postponed marrying until 1875 and does it sound believable?  Also, does Leon's original marriage documents from S.F. list his parents?  I'm not familiar with the details on civil records, so forgive me if that is a stupid question/suggestion.

If you have no evidence that Leon is Guillermo's child, you might consider other ways of re-affirming that your intuition is correct.  For example, did Guillermo and Ma. Placida name Leon or his sister after Guillermo's brothers and sisters or parents?  I have often found that children will be named in honor of ancestors, and if the name is uncommon for that time period, it could be a clue that you have the right people.

Just put notes in your genealogy report explaining how you formed your conclusions and if it makes others uncomfortable, maybe they

Greetings and Introduction

Hello Steve,

I am so impressed with how you're going about your research. I am
basically following the same standard of confirming everything off
the actual microfilm. If I find someone on the IGI, I do add them
to my database and reference the IGI, but will eventually go to the
microfilm and get a print. I didn't find a link between us, but it
could be we will find one later as we get further back. I only wish
I had started my research when I was your age or that I had more
free time to visit my local FHC. By the way, I live in Elk Grove, CA
(a suburb of Sacramento).

do you mean at the LDS Library in SLC or the Family History Center near

missing baptismal & other records

All right, here's another problem, actually several questions, I'm
putting in the hands of this knowledgeable group:

Over the years we've tried to find my paternal grandfather's baptismal
record, going through many films of Bautismos in El Sagrario. I know
now where and when he was born, as eventually his civil birth record
was found under just his mother's name. His name was Leon CALVILLO
Ponce, natural son of Jose Guillermo CALVILLO Ursua and Maria Placida
PONCE Medina. (His parents, my great-grandparents, were eventually
married through the Church, in 1875.)

But here's my question: He should have been baptized sometime in April
1869. Although we couldn't find him in any of the relevant books, we
did come across a mystifying reference to a 'libro secreto #2' wherein
(I assume) were written the entries of natural or illegitimate
children [Film #299489, Bautismos del Sagrario 1868-1870]. If I were
to find this libro secreto #2, maybe it would list my

more Autlan de la grana

Thanks to members of this group who sent me notes about Autlan de la
grana. Finally we know what happened to it - nothing! The name was
changed, that's all. It's been there all along, in fact, since the 7th
century.

My gr-grandparents' notebook is from about 1870 to 1884. I vaguely
remember my abuelita mentioning the Cristero wars.

For sgapodaca: The only APODACA surnames I have in my database are

1) Don Andres APODACA, c. 1780.

He was padrino, with Maria Antonia GARSIA, to her granddaughter, Maria
Marsela, hija legitima de Juan Jose SERRANO y Maria Simona RADILLO
Garsia in Feb. 1822, in Autlan. Maria Antonia GARSIA was the first
wife of Joseph RADILLO-GUSMAN. (Joseph RADILLO-GUSMAN I believe was my
gr3 grandfather, with his second wife, but I can't prove it yet.)

Don Andres APODACA was also padrino, with the same Maria Simona
RADILLO, above, to Jose Valerio, hijo legitimo de Jose Maria GARSIA y
Felipa QUIÑONES in Feb 1823.

2) Julia APODACA, c. 1840, with

=======================================

Dear Associates and Fellow Members:

The following notes are rules of thumb for International Genealogical
Index (IGI) searches in Mexico. (© 2000 by John P. Schmal, JohnnyPJ@...).
The IGI is a dynamic database that can be of tremendous help in locating Mexican
ancestors between 1700 and 1880. It has a filter, so that you can limit
your search to particular states.

1. Don't be confused by spelling. The IGI groups together similar
sounding surnames through soundexing. Spelling is the least reliable
indicator in Mexican genealogy. A surname that is spelled one way in
1800 may be spelled differently in 1850. Robalcaba may be spelled
several ways: Rubalcaba, Rubalcava, Robalacaba, Robalcava.

2. Always consider how close your locality is to the nearest state
boundary. People moved around. They may be in Sinaloa in one generation
and in nearby Sonora in
