Carol, I use PAF 5, which I downloaded from the Familysearch (the LDS website). The product is free. You can't beat that! This version follows the Microsoft standard interface. So, if you are familiar with the use of Microsoft products, you will not have too hard of a time learning to use this product. People become accustomed to the product they learn to use first, so each person will have a preference for one product over the other. I reccomend this one because it is free, and I've been able to produce every kind of report I've ever had a need for. All the files I have uploaded to this website have been produced using PAF 5. Hi Carol,
I had previously used a program called Generations. I
have since switched to a free program which you can
download off of Ancestry.com . I have actually found
this program to be easier to utilize. It has the
ability to create charts and a variety of other
reports. Pretty awesome for being free!! In my
opinion it would be the perfect program for the
beginnings of your genealogy.
Good luck!!
Sincerely,
-Esther Valencia

As for myself, I have always used Family Tree Maker, by Brøderbund. While I cannot say anything about RootsMagic, I am quite familiar with Personal Ancestral File. I have always found PAF cumbersome and awfully hard to manipulate in. Even doing the simplest of commands is a mindboggling undertaking. Sorry to any PAF fans out there, but I give it two thumbs down. :( I would like to familiarize myself with RootsMagic. Sounds good. While Family Tree Maker is great if you want to create custom made reports, single person descendancy charts, pedigree charts, family group sheets, and many other things, I do not have much freedom to arrange the items in a family group sheets in the precise order that I want. Family Tree Maker also makes really nice picture pedigree charts. I have been doing this for a while now, and it's really not hard to do at all. Regards, Steven H.

I use Personal Ancestral File. I got it because it was only $6. It gets the job done, so I haven't looked into any of the other programs.

I switched from Family Tree Maker to RootsMagic. I prefer the charts available especially the Pedigree and Photo charts. Gloria

Yes, I
agree that this is an excellent vol. set. Hopefully Stephen will continue to keep us up to date as to when the newer ed. will become available since he knows Dn. Mariano Gonzales-Leal. I was able to fortunately access (via Interlibrary Loan) both vols. 1 & 2 of the first ed., and the information is incredible. Vol.
2 covers last names from A-Gomez-Portugal. Maybe
Stephen could put in a word for me, and include my (5th Great Grandfather) ancestor, Vicente-Ferrer Gomez, (Please see the following VicenteGomez family tree) and not just Agustin, his brother in the newer edition. :) Hey,
Vicente & his wife, Maria-Cayetana Macias(-Valadez) left a large number of descendants in the Jalostotitlan area. Okay,
maybe just mention that Agustin had a brother, Vicente-Ferrer Gomez. Pg.466, under Segunda Linea of the second volume. :) To quote my dad, "Nosotros los Gomez, no seriamos de mucho dinero, pero si de orgullo". I have

I just started researching my ancestors and would like some recommendations on a software program that can help manage the names and information. I thought I would just start with my maternal grandmother's side of the family from Ciudad Guzman in Jalisco but it is now turning into a bigger tree than I originally thought. A program that can be uploaded to this site would be helpful so that I can publish the data. Thanks, Carol Ramirez

My Nina is an ALTEÑA, and so are my Mamá, Abuelita, y Tías.

Actually the descriptive adjective or term for anything or anyone from Los Altos de Jalisco would be Alteño, if they were male/masculine, and Alteña, if they were female/feminine. So Joseph, your Nina would be an Alteña, unless she found a way to switch gender.
And in response to the question, where is Los Altos and what's so special or different about it, here's a map to show what area we're talking about:

Digest Number 204
Dear Group-- My husband and I spent 10 days in Jalisco in December. We went a few times to the city of Atotonilco el Alto but spent most of the time with our cousins in the nearby villages of Margaritas, Santa Elena, San Joaquin, and Milpillas. There is another place in Jalisco called Atotonilco el Bajo so I always make sure to say the complete name of the first city mentioned. My niece and I went two different days to view the local cemeteries. The first was the old cemetery in Atotonilco el Alto. A few years ago there was a flood and it destroyed some of the plots. Where before the dates could go back hundreds of years, that is not the case today. Next trip I will check the new cemetery of Atotonilco el Alto and see what I can find. We also went to the cemetery near Margaritas which among others, serves the people of Margaritas, San Joaquin and Santa Elena. It wasn't for me but I was looking for the name of Borunda for a contact of mine. I found lots. We went on a day of
Teul Zacatecas
Is anyone doing any research of Teul Zacatecas records? I am specifically interested in Antonio Castro, son of José Guadalupe Castro and Cenobia Rivera. Antonio would've been born in the early 1900's or late 1890's. Maria

My Nina is an Alteño
I just got off the phone and it turns out that my Nina who married my
Nino, Jose Refugio Puentes, is an Alteño. If anyone comes across any of
these names from San Miguel el Alto please let me know.
Estanislao Marquez (dob: 1857) married Teodora Jimenez and had a Mateo
Marquez who later married a Juana Peragon who was born in Spain.
Yes I realize this is not much to go on but if it rings a bell let me know. Joseph
ps: she mentioned misc. stuff like another cousin of mine who is from
San Juan de los Lagos was a De Anda.
pps: Is San Miguel el Alto the only Pueblo/Rancho in Los Altos area that
has "el Alto" in its name? My Nina said, "my grandparents were from 'el
Alto' and it seems that i remember 'San Miguel el Alto' " but then she
was talking about San Juan de los Lagos so I didn't get a 100%
confirmation on San Miguel el Alto only a "pretty sure." She did go on
to say that when her grandmother died that her grandfather went to San
Juan de los Lagos and 6 months

Familia Garnica de Arandas, Jalisco
|
Merry Christmas everyone,
I had sent Joseph the cover and table of contents of Mariano González Leal's book "Retoños de España en la Nueva Galicia" a long while back. The scanned cover and info should be in a special section of the Ranchos newsgroup webpage.
Also, in regard to a message someone posted yesterday about the Garnica surname of Arandas, Jalisco, anyone out there who also has the same branch should be quite happy to know that I also have that same line. As I have mentioned on more than one occasion, I have done more Arandas (and Ayo el Chico) research than any other town in Los Altos put together. My Garnica line can be seen in the 4th pedigree chart I submitted of my ancestry.
Since I discovered my Garnica connection when reached this point of my research several years back, I have been investigating them tenaciously. Many years ago I discovered the marriage of don Nicolás Antonio de Castro y Garnica with María Antonia Rizo, dated 29 February 1756, in the
