I was quite surprised to find that a Google search could turn up so much information on an ancestor.

Just for the hell of it I entered DIEGO ROMO DE VIVAR. I knew he was born in Spain in 1608, married Maria Rnagel who was also born somewhere in Spain in 1612, and that they started a large family in Aguascalientes, New Spain.

The Google search revealed that he created the town of Rincon de Romos in 1658 when he bought a hacienda owned by Pedro Rincon de Ortega that had long been named “Chora.” I thought Rincon de Romos meant the Corner of the Romos, but it actually is a combination of the former owner’s surname, Rincon, with that of the purchaser, Romo.

Rincon de Romos is 41 kilometers north of the City of Aguascalientes, in the state of Aguascalientes.
Rincon de Romos is a handsome town, from the pictures I’ve seen online it looks like a little chunk of Spain.

Has anyone been there? I will have to visit. I’ll bet there’s even a portrait of my ancestor in city hall.

I haven't been able to find anything before Diego Romo de Vivar and Maria Rangel, no parents, city or province of birth. There is a record of their crossing to the New World together.

Am I missing a source for their lineage in Spain?

Nathan,

I have just recently found some of my ancestors from Pabellon, Rincon de Romos, Ags.
Maria Cayetana Esparza Luevano would be my GGG grandmother, born in Hacienda de Pabellon about 1813 according to the marriage document. She was the daughter of Doroteo Esparza and Maria Dolores Luevano. Doroteo and Maria Dolores were married in Pabellon, Rincon de Romos. Ags on 18 Jan 1807.

I have not ordered any films from Aguascalientes yet because I ordered five rolls of films of Nochistlan Zac at the end of January when they announced the price increase so I could order just before the rates went up to $5.50. I am still working through some of these rolls and don't want to order any film until I finish with what I have on order.

I am very anxious to begin my research in Rincon de Romos but it will have to wait.
Thanks for that information.

I have been to Aguascalientes, that was back in 89/90 before I knew I had ancestors from Aguascalientes or even before I

Hi Alicia,

Glad to hear of you finding roots in Aguascalientes. I also have roots
there as on the death certificate of my GGG grandfather Pedro Torres it
is said he was from Aguascalientes. I don't know more than that. . .one
of the many trails that I will have to follow as time permits.

Recently I was in the Univ. of NC, Chapel Hill map room and I decided to
do some digital copies of the Aguascalientes area. I didn't do ever
corner of it but just some of the highlites. . .

In the maps Album you'll find it now broken up into five subfolders:
Reference, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Historical, and Zacatecas.

in the Aguascalientes subfolder there is a map there called Pabellon de
Hidalgo. I think this map might be close to where your Hacienda de
Pabellon might be, but it is probably on the next map sheet over to the
right or east of the one shown. Have a look and if you want I can hunt
for it next time I'm at UNC. I think I remember seeing Rincon de Romos,
but couldn't find it

One way to save dinero is to order microfiche if your data is available in that format. The LDS tells me they do not intend to increase the price of fiche, and it currently costs only 15 cents each!

I'll bet we are related. Probably through the glorious Petronila Moctezuma. I'm descended from her older daughter, Ana Francisca Gabay de Moctezuma. I think you might be descended from her younger daughter Maria who married into the Luevana family.

Has anyone found a date of death for Petronila? I've gone through dozens of documents on her and none has a date of death listed, only her birth in 1550 in Aguascalientes.

It is a dream of mine to find a portrait of her. I think there is a good chance that one exists in Aguascalientes.

Hi!

I tried to order a group of microfiche for Nuevo Leon a few weeks ago from
SLC but I was told they no longer sold them because everything was on
computers now. I was very disappointed to hear that because I was able to
obtain a microfiche reader and bought a lot of microfiche some years
ago.....but then gave a friend of mine my entire Nuevo Leon microfiche set
because I knew I could order more for myself.....well, now I don't have any
for myself! If you find out that they still can sell them, please let me
know so I can order more.....Thanks!

Josie

Now I've seen some things on microfiche, but not the baptismal, death,
marriage records we seem to be getting most of our info from. I see the
baptism records only on microfilm usually in 35mm but sometimes the
narrower 16mm (?). Are these the records you both are referring to or
other records. If you are talking about baptismal I would like to see an
example. I know the IGI and other types of records are on fiche, but not
the others. Can you both explain what you all are researching on fiche.

Hi Joseph!

What I have seen on the microfiche is the name, event, parents names, etc.
Right now I do not have access to my microfiche since I am not home but if I
recall correctly they include the film number and, I believe, the batch
number. From there you go to the microfilm and view the document.
Mickey.....correct me if I am wrong.....Thanks!

okay yes you are referring to the IGI which is the same thing as what
you see on the internet except that they stopped updating the Microfiche
version a good while back. I've heard there are some advantages and
please point out more if you know. One advantage is that you have all
the surnames grouped together by state. With the internet version you
have to supply a first name and then it only allows you to see 5000
records at a time.

What else do you like about the fiche other than if the net goes down
you'll still be able to hunt for records to later view on film.

ps: saludos to your grand-daughter
