When gathering LDS records is it assumed that when they "Nochistlan, Zac." they mean Nochistlan de Mejia, Zac. or do they mean the smaller town to the North East called simply Nochistlan. Or perhaps this is an entirely different place than two I am considering?

I've come across two new situations that have become stumbling blocks to my reseach. I refer to them as stumbling blocks, not brick walls, because I believe it's just a matter of my inexperience that is causing the problem. I'm sure that more experienced researchers know how to deal with them, and will be willing to share and educate.
1. How do you research in Spain when you don't find IGI films to view? I've studied the PARES site and have found posssibly useful information, but don't know how to access birth, baptismal, or other records or documents to verify that I'm dealing with the right person. I'm sure I need to acquire a new mindset, different from what I've been doing up to now with online IGI and FHC films, and I'm willing to learn.
2. How do you access films (#1553565, batch #0760031) that can't be sent to FHC and have limited access at the FHL?

I live in Rancho Cucamonga, which is about 60 miles east of L.A. and is
right next to the Ontario International Airport (ONT). The ONT is much more
easily accessible than LAX. Rancho Cucamonga is also central to all of
southern California. There are a few hotels in the city, all of which are
very nice, but the one I work with for the education seminars I host charges
a discounted rate of $79 plus taxes per night; it is six miles from the ONT
and does have a shuttle to the airport.
Depending on the size of the group, we can meet in a home, or I have access
to a very nice facility that charges $16 per hour for a room that holds
about 40. Or more for a larger room.

There were a number of people who were interested in attending, but for
various reasons were not able to. Many of those interested parties are from
the Los Angeles, CA area and have expressed an interest in having the next
conference there. We are more than willing to consider holding the 2011
Conference in the Los Angeles area, but to do so would require a resident of
that area to help us secure a location and help with the logistics. I want
to ask any of you living in the Los Angeles area if you would be willing to
undertake that responsibility? Please let me know ASAP because we'd like to
begin planning as early as possible. I would also like to get an idea of the
number of people interested in attending and/or being a Speaker. It will
most likely be held n April or May 2011.

Seeing my e-mail inbox fill up with members not sure if they should purchase a book or inquiring to its content.....I have a suggestion.
Take advantage of your local library. Many, many moons ago I borrowed Mariano Gonzalez Leal's book "Retoños De España En La Nueva Galicia" through interlibrary loan. In fact it was one of the first books I saw regarding Nueva Galicia. Since then I have used interlibrary loan when trying to find books out of print. I've copied what I needed and have never been disappointed.
In these times where our pocket book is tight or a little lean, take advantage of the free service. Go to Google books, enter the author or title of the book you are looking for. When the book link pops up on the left hand side there is a link "find in library". That will direct to "WorldCat.org". WorldCat lists the book and in this case there is a copy in Mexico, Spain, Stanford in California, San Antonio, Tx and Princeton in NJ. Take this printout to your local library and fill out the form...sometimes I just give my copy of the print out to the librarian and they try to find a closer location who owns a copy.
Another book I obtained through interlibrary loan a long time ago was "Sagrada Mitra de Guadalajara Antiguo Obispado de la Nueva Galicia". The book came from U.C. Riverside, CA. So I got to see the book before Maria de la Luz Montejano Hilton sold it to the general public.
Also check out the LDS library catalog for books on microfilm. I know that Mariano's other book regarding the Romo de Vivar's and Guerra family is available....since I have also copies of it.

I'm researching my ancestors, I am not an advanced geneologist by any means and any help would be greatly appreciated. My maternal grandfather is Julian Beltran Ramirez, his parents were Francisco Beltran and Aniceta Ramirez Curiel. In the 1930 Census it lists my grandfather as having been born in Juanacatlan, Jalisco in 1910 and his father from La Cofradia, Jalisco in 1874 and his mother from Zaplotanejo, Jalisco in 1875. I am looking for dates and information(birth, death, etc) for their parents. Eduviges Beltran and Francisca Navarro. I only have their names but I can't find any dates for them or where exactly they are from.
My maternal grandmother is Gregoria Flores Alvares born in 1915 and her parents Marcelino Flores born in 1890 and Simona Alvares born in 1900. In the 1930 census it just lists all of them as being from Jalisco, Mexico.

Several months ago, there was an inquiry on Josefa Beas, and
Juan Thadeo Salas. I have now found the line in my paternal data base.
I have found two son’s with marriage records in Totatiche, Jalisco,
1775 and 1872. I’m sorry, I have not been able to locate the
original posting on Nuestro's Rancho's. It appears that we have common
ancestors,and I can now share the information on our family line.

In 1591, 400 families left Tlaxcala to colonize the northern lands of the Chichimecas. Some of them reached Zacatecas. I believe some of them went north to New Mexico with Juan de Onate in 1598. I'm trying to locate a list of the Tlaxcalans.
One of my ancestors, Juan de Leon Brito married Sebastiana Madrid in 1692 at Guadalupe del Paso. He returned to New Mexico following the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 to his ancestral lands in the Analco barrio of Santa Fe. He has been identified as a Tlaxcalan Indian.
Please help me locate any available lists of the 400 Tlaxcalan families.

Joseph, thank you for helping me do my own genealogical research to find my relationship to my two great uncles: Generals Paulino Navarro Serrano, after whom the city of Autlán de la Grana was renamed Autlán de Navarro in 1939, and Marcelino García Barragán, Governor of Jalisco 1943-1947, Secretary of Defense of Mexico, 1964-1968, when students were shot during demonstrations on the 2nd of October before the opening of the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City on October 12, 1968.

Hello Alice and Joseph. I'd like to take a minute and address your very honest question about the contents of the books by Mariano Gonzalez-Leal. Your question resonates with me because I too had the same curiosity but never bothered to ask, because when it comes to book: "Yeah, I want them even though I don't know what's inside, and I sometimes regret buying them." It's my secret addiction...
Considering that we are all at different levels of research and understanding about our genealogies, I think it's a good gesture for those who are more advanced in their studies to give more than a perfunctory answer to your question. That's what we're here for, right?
The series is a comprehensive study of the families who lived and settled the regions of Nueva Galicia. It's not specific only to Los Altos, as there are many families mentioned in the books who lived in Aguascalientes, Guadalajara, Zacatecas, etc. The first volume gives an overview of the geography, historical setting, and local culture. It has some (but not many) family trees, mostly from the 17th Century, so if you're hoping to make a connection - you should have traced some lines back at least that far.
The series is split alphabetically, and since I only have the first and second volumes, I can only attest to these two. Volume two has a total of 40 families/surnames histories (starts with ACEVES and ends with GOMEZ-HURTADO DE MENDOZA). I must admit that I found a couple of discrepancies - so a lesson learned is to always seek to double-check and confirm that the information is accurate, no matter who the author is. All and out: it is an invaluable source of information. I was able to make many discoveries that otherwise, I would not have made. The author has dedicated a lot of hard work to these books, and I can't wait to see the revised versions!

Hello -- I believe the following account refers to my great grandfather, Mariano Gutierrez, who was killed during the Cristero movement in San Miguel el Alto, Jal.
A las 11 de la mañana de este mismo día, salieron unos soldados a traer pastura al rancho Los Magueyes, a unos 3 Kms. al oriente de la población, donde encontraron al Sr. Mariano Gutiérrez, persona honrada y pacífica y sin motivo le dieron muerte, dejando huérfanos 13 hijos. [21 Nov 1927]
. . . naturally I went directly to the microfilms to view death records for this date. Unfortunately, on 22 Oct 1926, there is a page in the microfilmed book that I imagine explains why the records stopped at this point and did not commence until 1930. However, I am not able to interpret some of the words and some of the writing is not legible.
If there is an expert out in Nuestros Ranchos cyberspace who wants to take a shot at translating this document and/or providing any historical references, I would greatly appreciate it. I will send the scanned document to those that respond.

Does anyone know how I can locate a certain church in Mexico? For example, I know that my grandmothers parents were married in San Juan de los Lagos, but I do not know what church. THe document says the priest is Don Urbano Barragan Velasco, a minister is also listed as Presbitero Francisco Esquivel and a "Father Priest" Senor Cura Pantaleon Fortolero. The priest who certifed the document in 1950 is named Estaban Sanchez V. I guess I may want to search the surnames of the priests to find family members who can tell me where this church is located. Any other suggestions?
