I have located the will of Diego Vallin, husband of Francisca Ruis de Esparza, dated October 1679.

This will is in the Archives of Aguascalientes at http://sigue.aguascalientes.gob.mx/AXWeb/Main.aspx?DataSource=APPXTENDER (use search parameter *Vallin to find it).

It is somewhat difficult for me to read, but I think it has the following information:

Diego was the son of Geronmio Vallin and Dona Francisca de Carara (I'm not sure about her last name), and married (1) Dona Mariana de Sandia, daughter of Juan Marin de Penalosa and Dona Maria de Sandi. They had two children

(1) Dona Francisca de Herrera who married Andres de Sandoval
(2) Bartholome Vallin, apparently unmarried and of age 21 or 22

Diego married (2) Francisca de Esparza daughter of Salvador de Esparza and Maria de Vielma. They have two children under the age of 14

(1) Nicolas
(2) Antonia

I can find no reference to children of Francisca de Esparza by her first husband.

Is Villita de San Jose the same as La Villita (Guadalupe Victoria)and if not where is Villita de San Jose located.thanks

I have a direct ancestor who died in Aguascalientes in 1788. Her burial record says that she received "sepultura ecclca. [ecclesiastica] con cruz basa en fabrica de dos pesos." I'm not sure if it's "basa" or "baja." In either case, I have no idea what this means. Could someone please shed some light on this? Thank you.

García de Monroy Pizarro fue hijo de Francisco de Monroy Pizarro y de Aldonza de Castro (Almesto y Suárez de Figueroa).”

I am trying to determine where the multiple Garcia de Monroy y Pizarro fit in, specifically my 9th GGF, Garcia de Monroy y Pizarro married to Mariana Melendez de León.

The first, (1)Garcia de Monroy Pizarro (abt 1600- bef Oct 1654)) married to Luisa de León Castro y Ulloa is mentioned in this post but records only go back to 1649. The records of their children’s baptisms I do have and believe Luisa de León Castro y Ulloa was the first spouse.

The second, (2)Garcia de Monroy Pizarro (abt 1600- bef Oct 1654) married Maria de la Cueva Mendoza. I believe this is the same person as previously mentioned with a second spouse. I found records that mention him being deceased “ya difunto” by Oct. 1654 in his daughter’s wedding, Maria de la Cueva Monroy (abt 1637-bef 1663) with Joseph Lopez de Salazar (m.05/22/1655 in Tequila, Jal).

The third, (1.a)(Alférez or Ensign) García de Monroy y Pizarro (abt.1630- aft. 1660) married to Catalina Gomez de Bribiesca. He is mentioned in several records as godparent along with his wife after 1654, long after the other Garcia de Monroy Pizarro was deceased. Some records include his title, “Alférez” so he is the correct person. There is also a record that states "su hermano de la madre de el niño" where he is padrino for child of Catalina de Monroy y Pizarro.

The fourth, (3.)García de Monroy y Pizarro (abt 1650-bef. 1713) married to Mariana Melendez de León (m. 03/19/1669 Guadalajara). This is my 9th GGF and I am trying to see who the parents were. His children were also born in Tequila, Jal but a bit later during the early 1680s.

Last, there is (4.)Francisco de Monroy y Pizarro (abt 1630-) married to Francisca Gomez Bribiesca de Meza. I am not sure where he fits into all this as I am not done with the records of this film.

What is the Abbreviation ? is this Sotomayor ?
The name appears as Fernando Martinez Sotoma. with a small 'r' above the " a."

shot in the dark but if anyone is researching these individuals from the Tlaltenango or Jerez area of Zacatecas this info might be interesting to inspect:

I would like to give tips to people out there that are interested in looking up people or ancestors that traveled by ship from Spain to Nueva Espana (Mexico).

Each pasajero has a document usually abouot 4 - 10 pages long on average. But here is the thing? Each pasajero many times has people that traveled with him on the ship such as "su mujer," "sus hijos," "criados." Those extra people traveling with the pasajero are buried in the document. So you have to read the document to find the names of the other people that traveled with the "pasajero."

The point I am trying to make is that in he pars website for example, it will list names of the pasajero's who sailed to Nueva Espana. But they had people that traveled with them that are named inside the pasajero's document which you will have to read to find who they are.

You can search "pasajeros." Then on the left side after the list comes up you can filter by years. For example I wanted to searched 1687 so I filtered for 1687 range. I picked the one on the list called "informacion y licencias de pasajeros a indias 1687."

Even though it doesn't show digital documents attached. Don't be fooled. They many times are attached. So I would click on "view in original presentation." It would take me to the next page called "Pares."

In the middle of the page "1687" then there would be "153 units attached."

I would click on the 153 units attached. And they they are. A list of names of 153 pasajeros. Then I would open each document and read through it to see who traveled with him in the form of "su mujer," "sus hijos," "criados."

Relacion de pasajeros - gives more names of passengers

Registro de navios - before the fleets were to sail to nueva espana, ships were being registered with things about their cargo for example.

Here is a website of the "flotas" that sailed to nueva espana (mexico) and if you click on one it gives the whole list of names of ships that sailed that year.

De Diego Zermeño, no habia oido hablar de el, el caso es de que hay un Domingo Vasquez Zermeño que fue bautizado 2 May 1653, en Lagos de Moreno,  lo que puede encajar en el periodo de tiempo que ya mencionaste.
Por los menos Juan Vasquez Zermeño y Teresa de Anda tuvieron aparentemente a un
Juan, Martin y Domingo Vasquez Zermeño. De acuerdo con la Sagrada Mitra de Guadalajara.
No sabía que Juan Vasquez Zermeño tenía relación con los García Arrona. Puedes dar mas luz de cual es la relación con los Garcia Arrona.
Esta familia Vasquez Zermeño, aparentemente esta con relación con los Vasquez Lara, y hasta cierto punto es confusa la relación, sabes mas de esto?

Sorry I've been out of touch with the group, but I've been researching elsewhere in Mexico this past year. As of late I have been doing research in Nayarit working on my Rios Californio line. For the past few weeks I've been reading Tepic burials and in the past week Compostela burials.

Tonight I found Da Maria de Olibarri, the wife of Dn Pedro de Abalos (Davalos) Bracamonte. The document can be found on image 10 Compostela, Nayarit Entierros 1663-1797. This family is from Guadalajara from what I can tell from the other information I've found. The document lists their 7 children, Alo (Alfonso I believe), Francisca, Nicolas, Pedro, Leonor, Diego and Madgalena. Maria was buried in 1666.

While searching Tepic and Compostela burials I'm coming across a lot of people from Guadalajara, a few from Aguascalientes, Nochitlan, and a few from Jalos. Just giving you all a heads up.

Several of us descend from Alonso de Estrada, royal treasurer and colonial governor of Nueva España, during the time of Cortés. Legend has him as the bastard son of Rey Fernando II el Catolico and a Luisa de Estrada, daughter of an ambassador. This is refuted by the 1585 limpieza de sangre of his great-grandson, Gobernador Jorge de Alvarado y Villafañe, which names Alonso de Estrada’s parents as Juan Fernandez Hidalgo, of Ciudad Real, and his first wife - whose name none of the witnesses could remember, only that his 2nd wife was surnamed Oliver. It did name his paternal grandparents as Diego Fernandez Hidalgo and Maria Gonzalez de Estrada. That document can be found at the PARES website, and it is digitized in its entirety, if you want to read it, though it is long and a hard read. It is the only historical document that I know of that names the father of Alonso de Estrada. Until now…and believe me, this one is a MUCH easier read!

I was grazing through the Mexican Inquisition archives, and I randomly came upon this. It’s the limpieza and proof of nobility of Licenciado Alvaro Gomez de Abaunza y Castro, oidor de la Audiencia de Guatemala, and later alcalde de crimen de la Audiencia de Mexico, and of his wife, Doña Isabel Costilla de Saavedra. It appears to be dated 11 Dec 1608. While glancing through their lines, I noticed that she was great-great granddaughter of Alonso de Estrada and Doña Marina Flores de la Caballeria, and to my amazement, it names their parents! I jumped out of my chair!

According to her prueba de nobleza, Alonso de Estrada’s father was Juan Fernandez de Estrada, corresponding with the 1585 Jorge Alvarado limpieza, but it names his mother as Luisa de Oliver. She might be the N. de Oliver mentioned in the 1585 limpieza, making her Fernandez’s second wife, and therefore step-mother of Alonso de Estrada - unless his father married sisters, which is totally possible.

Either way, while the identity of his mother might still be in doubt, we now have a second document confirming that Alonso de Estrada was son of Juan Fernandez de Estrada, aka Juan Fernandez Hidalgo, who, according to the entry for Marina de Estrada (img249L), was:

I have been curious about slaves in Nueva Espana because when I had watched the TV Series "Roots" about slaves in the USA. I was impacted by the suffering they went through.

So I have been trying to look at documents about "esclavos" that were taken to Nueva Espana but they were also taken to other parts of the Americas such as Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Repulic, etc.

When I had seen in the pars website, I saw that slaves were picked up mostly at "New Guniea and Angola" that were brought to Nueva Espana but they were first brought to Cuba.

In the archives of aguascalientes, there were slaves sold at "Real De Asientos" and "Aguascalientes." You can look that up in the Aguascalientes archives under "Compraventa de Esclavos"

Over at "Real De Asientos" there is a building that looks like in a desolate area called "Galeron de esclavos." But now it seems to not be anymore on tourist websites. I used to see it years ago and also saw a youtube on that. Now, they are practically all gone.

If you look in images in google "Galeron De Esclavos Real De Asientos Aguascalientes" you can see only two pictures of that place.

Hello All. I hope everyone is well.

I am looking for information on Lorenzo de Espino and Maria de Aguilar y Elizondo. Supposedly, they were married 1 Oct 1649 somewhere in Zacatecas. I don't know his parents, but Maria is identified on various trees as the daughter of Francisco de Elizondo and Magdalena de Aguilar Duarte.

The source for this info is:

Guillermo Garmendia Leal, Origen de los Fundadores de Texas, Nuevo Mexico, Coahuila y Nuevo Leon, Zacatecas Tomo 1, page 3, Matrimonios, 1649 - 1700.

I do not have this book, but I would like to know whether the marriage records cited in this book are on FamilySearch now so I can verify this information for myself, and also if anyone has any other information on this couple.

I believe through various records and dispensas I have all their children, but any information would be helpful. Thanks.

She says, when she and Alonso married, neither brought anything into the marriage, I guess, meaning she received no dote. She also explains that when their sons married, they gave them nothing, but their daughters received cartas de dote, including the 2 who entered the convent.

FRAY DIEGO DE FUENLLANA

While scrounging through the archives of the Inquisicion in Mexico, I located 2 procesos against her brother, Fray Diego de Fuenllana, both for “solicitar” (i.e. seducing women in his congregation). The first on 03 Jan 1583:

The 1583 proceso gives info about Fray Diego’s birth - he was born in Cuyseo (Cuitzeo), Mich, around 1546. It also includes a partial limpieza de sangre (image 125):

He says his father, Juan de Baeça was natural de Patzcuaro, where he served as magistrato. As for his mother, Ysabel Perez, I can’t make out the name of her birthplace. Anybody?

Unfortunately, he never knew his grandparents, so he didn’t know their names, except for his maternal grandmother: BEATRIZ DE TORRES. The missing piece! She would be the wife of conquistador Francisco de Santaella, I can’t make out the name of her birthplace. He also names a brother of his mother, Diego del Castillo, minero en el Fresnillo.

Estimados Señores,

Desciendo del matrimonio formado por Isidro de Orozco y Toledo y Antonia Girón y Castellanos quienes eran primos hermanos y casaron con dispensa por consanguinidad en Michoacán.

- Isidro de Orozco y Toledo era hijo de Diego de Orozco y Tovar y de María Girón de Castellanos.
- Antonia Girón y Castellanos era hija de Beatriz de Andrada y Paniagua y de Diego Girón de Castellanos.

La filiación de Diego de Orozco y Beatriz de Andrada es clara, ambos son hijos de Juan Sánchez de Paniagua y de Mariana de Andrada y Orozco.

La filiación de María y de Diego Girón de Castellanos no me queda clara y tampoco sé de dónde sale el apellido "Toledo".

Quizás sean parientes del Obispo de Michoacán Alonso Orozco Enríquez de Castellanos y Toledo puesto que la hija de su hermano García Enríquez de Castellanos y Toledo, doña Isabel Enríquez de Castellanos casó con Alonso Girón de Alvarado pudiendo haber usado sus descendientes el apellido compuesto Girón de Castellanos y Toledo.

Sin embargo, otra pariente del Obispo, Gracia de Castellanos y Toledo casó con Antonio Girón dándonos otra posibilidad.

Ante estos casos, alguien sabe quienes son los padres de Diego y María Girón de Castellanos?

Does anyone know if church records were recorded in government books? Is there an archive to look at those?

Example is a picture of one a historian sent me. I am trying to help him out.

Este es un tema que parece central en la investigación genealógica de los Cabral zacatecanos y por lo visto no hay una respuesta definitiva aún. La pregunta tiene varias modalidades, podríamos formularla al menos de dos formas más: ¿Tuvo Domingo Cabral (1610 ca.) hermanos y/o hermanas? o incluso ¿hubo otra rama Cabral en Jerez o alrededores sin relación con Domingo Cabral?

Toda investigación sobre los Cabral en esta región tiene que tomar muy en cuenta la investigación de Salvador Cabral Valdez, quien sin duda es el que más se ha ocupado del tema y lo ha hecho con el rigor y la paciencia que la investigación genealógica ha de tener.

Cuando le plantee esta pregunta a él, su respuesta, según recuerdo, fue que él no había encontrado hermanos de Domingo y tampoco otra familia Cabral en la región que tuviera un origen distinto al de Domingo.

Toda labor en Jerez va a toparse con el mal estado de los libros más antiguos y tambien con la irremediable pérdida de libros y registros. Según Salvador Cabral Valdez esta pérdida alcanzaba y superaba la cifra de 100. Sin embargo uno ha de seguir intentando, pues a veces pueden surgir indicios que abran posibilidades. El tema me toca personalmente pues pertenezco a este linaje jerezano y por lo tanto en mi labor de indagar en mi árbol he tenido que plantearme el tema más de una vez a lo largo de los últimos 20 años pues no fue nada fácil descubrir si mi linea se relacionaba con la de Domingo y por lo tanto elaboré una y otra vez distintas hipótesis, aunque al final y muy recientemente pude encontrar varios registros que me resultan probatorios respecto de mi vínculo con Domingo Cabral. Aún asi me sigue interesando el tema de de esta pregunta, no ya por el interés personal mío sino por el interés general de la genealogía Cabral en la región del norte de Jalisco y poniente zacatecano.

FamilySearch currently has baptismal records until 1682 for Ayotlan. However, there are some references to there being baptismal records back until 1622. For example, this Mexican governmental site on Arandas cites research by Jose Zocimo Orozco Orozco of baptimsal records from 1622 to 1682:

Does anyone have any idea on where one could get access to those records (and if there are others i.e. burial/marriage for the same time period)?

I am particularly interested in Bartolome de Aguirre who married Michaela Mendoza/Peres/Orosco. I have found his burial record for Sep. 2, 1724, but I would like to discover where he comes from.

Several other trees have him being born in Gamiz, Spain with the last name Aguirre Echevarria, but there are no other sources for their conclusions besides a birth record of a Bartolo Aguirre in Spain at a time that could have been my Bartolome's. I don't think this is enough information for that conclusion. Further, there are at least six other Aguirres in Ayotlan at this time who I believe could be siblings of my Bartolome. This leads me to believe that he is not the Spain connection just yet, but rather that it would be his father or grandfather earlier in the 1600s.

Here is the link to the burial record, but I was not able to definitely find any information in it that would give me a hint as to where he was from. I can't decipher the underlined word in the heading to his burial entry (I don't think it says Gamiz--the city from which the baptismal record that people cite). His record is on the right page 2nd entry. You may need to play with the lighting of the picture to see it better.
