General Digest, Vol 42, Issue 5

I am also the third generation born in this country. My father was raised in
East L.A. his grandparents came from Aguascalientes and Culiacan. My father
only spoke spanish until the age of 5 when he started attending public
school. My mother is a NewYorican ( a Puerto Rican from New York) her mother
came as a girl w/parents from Humacao, PR. She says she dosen't ever
remember not understanding both english and spanish. While both my parents
are bilingual they never taught their children spanish. They would say they
spoke primarily in english because they "think in english". The funny thing
is that they spoke spanish around us just enough for us to understand what
was being said when we heard the language, but we can't speak it. I have
learned that the 3rd generation born in the US usually don't speak spanish.
The first must speak it to communicate w/parents. The 2nd generation usually
speak it to communicate w/grandparents who frequently take care of them as
children. The third generation rarely speak spanish fluently. I have about
30 first cousins and none of them speak spanish except 2 of them who moved
to Mexico for an extended period of time to learn the language. I personally
feel like my parent did me a diservice.

A good program for translation has yet to be invented. In my opinion there
will never be a sutible replacement for a human translator. Language itself
is so complex and subjective that a computer just can't do the job properly.
The person that comes up with a good translation program will be rolling in
cash, but it's most likley not possible. I know a good professional
translator, if anyone is interested in hiring him let me know and I'll pass
along contact his contact information.

confirmation of your U106. I suggest emailing it to FTDNA and
requesting that your haplo be changed to R1b1b2g green as confirmed.
You could also email it to the U106 project administrator and also
advise that you are R1b1b2g confirmed. As to the offer below, I would
accept it, as many more recent studies are uncovering special genetic
groupings within the SNP's. The South Euro (Spain Portugal France) part
of U106 represents a very small 4%, with distintive differences in their
markers ie: DYS390+25, 385b=14 or 15, 447=25 or 26, 464A-D=15,15,16,17,
GATA H4=11, YCA I and II= 19, 23 or 24 and 456=15. These are all
different than the large modal for U106 (Frisian) which dominates the
project. My belief and that of other studies suggests these markers are
found in Basque and Gaelic populations that migrated from the Pyrennes
and Northern Spain to Ireland. This study may also shed light on when
and where this special signature emerged (Alpine Germanic? to Iberia) Lyn

Information Matrimonial records

I have been doing genealogy for the past 18 years and never found the benefits of the Information Matrimonial records until last night. In the past I have ordered rolls and rolls of these films looking for missing links with no success. But last night I was helping my research colleague with a mystery in Aguascalientes. He had the date of his ancestors marriage, but the marriage document didn't provide much information....date, their names and witnesses only. So for the heck of it I went to the Information Matrimonial film for the year of the marriage. I looked for the month previous to the date of this couples marriage and lo and behold it was there along with the names of the couples parents (one line came from Sierra de Pinos).

So if you're looking for the marriage of Joseph Peres and Juliana Chabes in Aguascalientes for 3 Feb 1704, the Information Matrimonial was in January, I believe it was image 15.

I just thought I'd share this new find....not sure if you've had the same problem that I've had with these records...I had pretty much given up on them due to frustration and cost....but now I know how to use them.....go back 6-3 weeks before the couples marriage. I'm hoping Jalisco, Zacatecas and Sonora digitized records will be online soon.

Well, looks like I'll be doing some major hunting this week-end.

Discontinuance of compoun surnames in Los Altos: Ruiz de Esparza--Research Digest, Vol 41, Issue 24

My first ancestor to stop using Ruiz de Esparza was known as Rafaela
Esparza at the time of her 2nd marriage (January 30, 1782). Her father,
Felipe-Toribio Ruiz-de-Esparza did use the compound surname. Maybe
they were preparing for Mexico's Independence when it would not have
been a good time to be connected to the Mother country, Spain. My Gomez
ancestor, Vicente Ferrer Gomez (his brother Agustin continued using the
compound name) had also dropped the Gomez de Mendoza when he married in
April 21, 1766 in the Jalostotitlan/San Juan de los Lagos area of
Jalisco.
What types of surname changes of others experienced?

This record is very typical for children of unknown parents, and the
padrinos named here happen to be my wife's direct-line ancestors. I
wonder what the relationship was between Antonia and her godparents,
when there are no other parents known. Did the godparents assume
responsibility for raising the child? Did they merely fine her a home?
Did they do little or nothing but allow their names to be written
down? Just how seriously did godparents take "su obligación y
parentesco espiritual"?

orignario o nacido

Hello research,

Does originario always mean birthplace?
I have run across a record that seems to say a child was "originario
de" one place and "nacido en" another place.

Maria y Maria Thereza

Does this suggest that the child's family lived in San Pablo
Teocaltiche but he was actually born and christened in Santiago?

Parents like godparents

I was reading the last part of the e-mail where it states that if a mother could be a godmother.

In Emergency Cases only.

In Guanajuato I was told several cases by my grandmother that when a child was ill at birth and was not going to make it....they would call upon a priest to come over and baptize the child and the mother would be the godmother if there was no one else available.

Another case I was told.....if parents lived out in the ranch but the priest was in the pueblo and a child was ill.....they would send someone to go and get the priest and if the priest was not available due to another person being ill and definitely not going to make it.....the priest would send the message to tell the mother to get some water and the mother was to baptize that child if she was really sure that the child was passing away .After, the priest would arrive and finished the baptism and would stay there for the funeral if the child passed away If.....the child did not pass away and the mother had already baptized...the child could not be baptized again.

And I believe this is still the case till today but now you'll know there are friends a families all around.

Records

Sigue en espanol.

I am new to genealogy. I ordered my first film from my local family history center. I guessed about the year and the place. However, I was lucky and found a relative. I ordered baptism records from San Miguel El Alto, Jalisco (1855-1857).

Some members of Nuestros Ranchos have mentioned that they have transcribed records and post them here or that they have finished the records and post them here. Where are these records transcribed from? Does this entail reviewing films or going to the actual site to review original records?

Excuse my ignorance, but since I am reviewing this records anyway, how could I help the members of Nuestros Ranchos?

______

The information comes from

http://www.mybajaguide.com/eng/destinations-history.php?id=3

"At this time, Mexicali was sparsely populated, with the exception of the area known as Algodones, inhabited mainly by the Cucapah tribe. The word Mexicali is a combination of “México” and “California”, coined in 1902 by Colonel Agustín Sanginez, the political chief of the Northern District. At one time, Mexicali was part of the Ensenada Municipality. The official date for the city’s foundation was March 14, 1903, and eleven years later the city became a municipality itself, forming its first city council.

Note: Some of the oldest families come from Algodones.

Apart from the municipal seat of Mexicali, the municipality of Mexicali is administratively subdivided into 14 boroughs (Spanish: delegaciones):

1. Los Algodones, located in the Valley Zone.
2. Bátaquez, located in the Valley Zone.
3. Cerro Prieto, located in the Urban Zone, is part of the Mexicali metropolitan area.
4. Venustiano Carranza, located in the Valley Zone.
5. Ciudad Morelos, informally known as Cuervos, located in the Valley Zone.
6. Colonias Nuevas, informally known as Km 57, located in the Valley Zone.

8. Ejido Hermosillo, located in the Valley Zone.
9. Estación Delta, located in the Valley Zone.
10. Guadalupe Victoria, informally known as Km 43, located in the Valley Zone.
11. González Ortega, informally known as Palaco, located in the Urban Zone, is part of the Mexicali metropolitan area.
12. Hechicera, located in the Valley Zone.
13. San Felipe, located in the Coastal Zone, to the south on the Gulf of California.
14. Benito Juárez, informally known as Tecolotes, located in the Valley Zone.
