FYI: IGI Searches by John Schmal

I wrote to John Schmal and he gave me permission to send this to the group.

=======================================

Dear Associates and Fellow Members:

The following notes are rules of thumb for International Genealogical
Index (IGI) searches in Mexico. (© 2000 by John P. Schmal, JohnnyPJ@...).
The IGI is a dynamic database that can be of tremendous help in locating Mexican
ancestors between 1700 and 1880. It has a filter, so that you can limit
your search to particular states.

1. Don't be confused by spelling. The IGI groups together similar
sounding surnames through soundexing. Spelling is the least reliable
indicator in Mexican genealogy. A surname that is spelled one way in
1800 may be spelled differently in 1850. Robalcaba may be spelled
several ways: Rubalcaba, Rubalcava, Robalacaba, Robalcava.

2. Always consider how close your locality is to the nearest state
boundary. People moved around. They may be in Sinaloa in one generation
and in nearby Sonora in

Autlán de la Grana, FOUND IT!!!!!

Hello, Gloria. To be honest with you, I was not sure where Autlan de
la Grana was, but I assumed that it was close to Autlan de Navarro.
Well, I did some extra google 'research' and found out where Autlan
de la Grana actually is. Autlan de la Grana is not only close to
Autlan de Navarro, but IT IS actually Autlan de Navarro. How old is
your great-grandparents notebook? The town's original name was
Autlan de la Grana, but according to a page that I read, it changed
to Autlan de Navarro on July 27, 1939 to honor General Paulino
Navarro. Even though the name of some communities oficially change,
some people still use the old name.
This has nothing to do with your question, but just as a curious
fact, I noticed that my Apodaca ancestors have lived for at least
two centuries in a small town in Jalisco called Santa Catarina. If
someone knows that his/hers own ancestors are from Santa Catarina,
but does not know where this village is, he/she will never find it
on a current map

Hello, I am new to the group

My name is Steve Campos and I am researching my father's line
from
El Cargadero, Jerez, Zacatecas.

The family names that I have found so far are Acuña, Arredondo,
Campos, Carrillo, Fernandez, Miranda, Ortiz, Ramires, and Ubillos.

I have a web site at http://home.earthlink.net/~jerez that contains
the basics of my research. I am over 3,200 people in my direct line
family and over 10,000 people in my database. I have collected
information on all of the family names in the Jerez microfilms that
I am researching, from the LDS church, in hopes of making a
connection some day. In doing this kind of research I have been
able to go from less than 100 people to the 3,200 people just by
finding the right connection.

It has taken several months to collect the data that I have so far.
With the church records being handwritten it sometimes takes a
little while to figure out what the priest was writing. It is also
been a challenge to determine correct spelling on some of the

not sure but check this site that Maria Cortez linked in the links area:

look under A and Autlan for a lot of info on Autlan in Jalisco. Not sure
if it will answer your question though,

Joseph,

You forgot country club memberships.  Just kidding.  My gosh, if you thought of everything on those lists on your own you are incredibly resourceful.

I don't recall when your people came into the states but if they were here in 1900, 1910, 1920 and/or 1930 have you accounted for them in the census records? If you find them in the census records around the time they came into the US that might give you some indication where they crossed into the US. In checking out my father's side of the family, I came across ALOT of information about the name Garza - there seems to be alot of them that settled in Nuevo Leon.  If you are interested in pursuing this, let me know - there is an amazing site that you may be able to tap into.

okay I've got all the stuff that was in the Aah-ther folder
transferred over to the Ranchos2 files area. You'll find a link to the
Ranchos2 files area in the links area.

Yahoo only allows me to subscribe 10 members per day so by the end of
the week I should have all of us moved onto the list. I'd rather do it
this way so I won't get confused. . .it doesn't take much.

anyway this really looks like the best way as we now have very much
room for new or updated genealogies. I guess this should provide a lot
of motivation. . .right?

Copywrite Law

Inspired by Maria Cortez and others I've added info on Copywrite Law to
the groups description and the first file in the files area.

Maria did the research and maybe later she can send a message to the
group outlining her findings on how our work is "already" copywrite
protected.

thanks Maria,

New Beginnings

I have finally begun my search in earnest. They say that nosotros los Mejicanos say manana and it could mean anywhere from manana to infinity.

Yesterday I spent all day on the internet in the family history library documenting the possible films I would need to request at my local FHC center for the Zacatecas/Nochistlan areas. I noted the two local locations available in my area with the addresses, times open etc.

Off I went this morning with all my data/facts in hand and with a little bit of family oral history. I arrived at my local center and it was closed, schedule said open T, W & TH 9 AM till 9 PM. The phone number listed for the other location in Milpitas has been disconnected with no new or forwarding number.

The moral of the story here is don't give up and don't get too frustrated. Remember it's still manana for this fifty something Zacatecana in San Jose.

PS: You all have inspired me with your intros and your bios to get moving, especially all the younger members

Greetings and Introduction

Hello, Janet. I remember you from a message board in Genealogy.com .
Unfortunately, we found out that there are no close matches in our
family tree. Something interesting, I noticed, by looking at message
boards, that there are a lot, and I mean A LOT, of Curiel's in the
area of Atenguillo-Guachinango-Mascota. You know, with all the
people researching Curiel ancestors from Atenguillo and close
villages we can create a new group exclusive for this surname in
this area.

That reminds me. Joseph, is it ok to invite another genealogist to
this group? I am very sure that he is serious about his research.
And yes, he is probably a distant Curiel primo.

Greetings and Introduction

Hello, possible primo.

I will have this is the Cervantes family that I have on my file.
Marcelo Cervantes, married Maria Salazar before 1821. So far, I have
verified four relatives. I have found others on the IGI, but I don't
put them on my file until I see with my own eyes the actual
microfilm or document where they are described. The children on my
file are: Cruz Cervantes born aroun 1821 in Los Pozos and married
with Maria Rita Apodaca, Maria Guadalupe Cervantes born around 1825
in San Marcos and married with Nemecio Apodaca, Ysidro Cervantes,
born around 1832 in San Marcos and married with Martina Gil, and
Higinia Cervantes born around 1846 and never married according to
her death certificate from 1916. As soon as I find some free time, I
will order some microfilms to find the baptim documents of the
Cervantes kids. I approximated their birth date from their marriage
or death records.

By the way, Angel, Zacoalco is actually a big municipio. There are
about 25,000

I'm also partial to continuing with the Ranchos 2 idea.  I've worked with Myfamily.com before and it is a good site, but with everyone in this group familiar with the current Ranchos site I think it is a better way to go.

Your idea sounds quite good.  I really don't think it would be too
much of a hassle to have to register to the other site.  We should keep
our private genealogies right here in Ranchos (1) and put other files and
messages in Ranchos2.  But having the other site sounds like a perfectly
good idea.
