It appears the Villalpando family held lands in and out of Guanajuato. It appears this Jusepe de Villalpando was a relative of the hacendado. Some other sources I have are the following:
“Juan Villalpando recibió como merced del Cabildo de la villa de León tres caballerías. Pedro Medel recibió otras tantas de la misma autoridad, que después vendió a Villalpando en $100 el 10 de febrero de 1610.” Haciendas de Guanajuato by Isauro Rionda Arreguín
In 1610 Juan de Villalpando had received three caballerías from the city council and then purchased the land that belonged to Pedro Medel, without doubt in my mind this Pedro Medel

Wow thats cool that you know exactly where to look for these things. I'm still going through all the baptismals for the years up to 1694 when my Vialpando's migrated to New Mexico. The land patent that they owned in New Mexico my cousins still have the rights to and use the land for grazing. They got it in the late 1800's. did you come across any in Jerez? I looked through all the baptismals they had for when Ambrosio should have been born and did not see one sigle Villalpando. I came across a place also in Leon called Cerrito de Jerez. I'm wondering if this is the Jerez that the marriage record was refrencing.

The matrimonial investigation of Tomas de Villalpando in 1677 (in Aguascalientes) begins as follows:
7em 4 1677
This document is for his marriage with Maria de Vargas.
The Thomas who is getting married would have been born about 1650/55, and his father Tomas, I estimate, would have been born about 1620.
I would like to know if, and how, Tomas de Villalpando is related to the Villalpandos mentioned in the prior postings.

George,
This is really interesting, thank you for sharing.I will also repost part of my last message, “Juan Villalpando recibió como merced del Cabildo de la villa de León tres caballerías. Pedro Medel recibió otras tantas de la misma autoridad, que después vendió a Villalpando en $100 el 10 de febrero de 1610.” Haciendas de Guanajuato by Isauro Rionda Arreguín. So if this Juan de Villalpando bought land in 1610, I will assume he was an adult as a landowner maybe born around 1580 or so. Could this Juan de Villalpando be the father or grandfather of our Tomas de Villalpando married to Maria Velez who had the Tomas de Villalpando who moved to Aguascalientes?

From the date range in which I estimate Tomas (who married Maria de Veles) could have been born, this is a possibility. But I have no evidence.
Tomas de Villalpando and Maria de Veles could have been married in the first part of the 1650s, or possibly earlier. This may be in the Leon marriage records, but I haven't looked at these records yet.

Ive been days and days into the Leon marriage records...I found this on somos primos, and I had already saved one from the records. They must have 2 for Marcos because the one i have is for a diffrent date, but looks like the same family.

You must have posted this just as I was posting my finding. The May 16, 1680 record has very little detail.
I wonder what the reference is for the Somos Primos citation. The image I found (image 31) does not have this level of detail; the records on the previous page are from Jan and Feb 1680.

I found this below in a website called "GuadalajaraGuadalajara.com-Efemerides".
"1714. Muere el pintor Cristóbal de Villalpando o Tomás de Villalpando, quien dejó varios murales en la Sala de Cabildo de Catedral y en el Museo."
My husband's ancestors Diego De Vialpando and Ysabel Losano had a son named Xptoval .born in November of 1679 in the capital city of Aguascalientes.
Do you think this is the same one that was the painter, and is he the same one who was the father of the Tomas who married Veles?

From what I can discern Cristobal was born about 1645, in Mexico City, was married had had four children. I've not seen the names of his spouse and children.
Your Diego, and the Tomas's, were contemporaries, but a relationship, if any, is unknown at present.
Some references on Cristobal:
Juana Gutiérrez Haces et al., Cristóbal de Villalpando: ca. 1649–1714 (1997), is a catalogue raisonné (ie, complete list of his works).
Villalpando’s life and work are treated in Manuel Toussaint, Colonial Art in Mexico (1967); and
Marcus B. Burke, Treasures of Mexican Colonial Painting: The Davenport Museum of Art Collection (1998).

I took a quick look in the first volume of Leon marriages (1636-1787) to see if there was any mention of Tomas de Villalpando and Maria de Veles.
The beginning of the volume is in pretty bad shape, and appears that a substantial number of pages are missing. There is very little from the 1630s, a little from the 1650s.
I found only two records of interest:
image 31: Marcos Villalpando and Maria Lopez, Espanoles, married 16 May 1680.
image 41: Francisco de Candelas married Catharina de Villalpando (daughter of Nicolas de Villalpando and Juana de Resina Vallesilla [I'm not sure if Vallesilla is part of the name], married 23 Jan 1689.
Tomas is not mentioned in either of these documents.

There is a Gabriel de Villalpando named in the Aguascalientes matrimonial investigations: He is the son of Diego de Villalpando and Da. Ysabel Losano, his propective bride is Da. Leonor de Sepulveda, daughter of Marcos de Sepulveda and Da. Mariana de Lomelin.
See the Aguascalientes Matrimonial Investigations, volume for 1702, image 205. It is dated 15 Apr 1702.
There is also a Cristobal de Villalpando, son of this Diego de Villalpando (see volume for 1704, image 46).
Hopefully this is the right Gabriel!

My maternal 4th great grandparents were Francisco de Pena and Maria Albina de Villalpando. They were married 19 Feb 1783 in Teocaltiche (Nuestra Senora de los Dolores), Jalisco. Albina's parents (My 5th great grandparents) were Juan Manuel Villalpando and Maria Gertrudis Soto. They were married 20 Feb 1757 in Teocaltiche (Nuestra Senora de los Dolores).
Any connections out there?

There is a Juan Manual de Villalpando, son of Tomas de Villalpando, bap. 27 Dec 1690, in Aguascalientes. He married in 1715, in Asientos, Maria Eugenia de Narbais. I think he was born too soon to be your Juan Manuel Villalpando (he would have been 67); although he could be the same. I have no death dates or other family information on Juan Manuel and Maria Eugenia. I do not know if he had other wives.
This is not impossible as Juan de Santiago y Escobar married his 3rd wife at age 64, and had at 10 children that I can document with her (he also had lots from his first two wives!) All of this is documented.

Thank you, George! I keep "on lookin'. I don't remember if I shared with you that this past March, I visited briefly the town of Villalpando in Spain. I took photos of a church dating to the 1600's for one of my friends whose surname is "Vialpando". (His family is from Colorado.) Who knows maybe I was standing on the ground of my Villalpando ancestors?
Have a great day, George.

This is my gabriel. I descend from him and his wife Leonor sepulveda thank you so much for adding another generation. Are his parents related to the Villalpandos that you have researching. Thanks again.
GAbriels greatgrandson traveled to Taos New mexico to visit relatives where one of his sons was born. This son married in Jalos where the family line continued
I have leonor and her ancestors but had been stuCk on gabriels parents. Gabriel and leonor's children were baptized in Nochistlan Zacatecas.
I cannot thank you enough. Two goals of mine are to connect the Villalpandos of aguasClientes to gabriel and to the Villalpandos of Taos new mexico. You have completed the first goal for me. Gabriel's grandson was visiting relatives in Taos when his wife gave birth to a son before moving back to JalostoTitlan.
I now remember the name of the gentleman who showed me the document stating that his mother in law descended from Moctezuma. His name is John Schmall

I'm glad I could help!
I do not know, yet, how Diego is related to the Tomas de Villalpando family. Perhaps he is a son of Tomas de Villalpando and Maria de Veles.
There is also a Nicolas de Villalpando in Leon at this same time, who had children. I do not how he fits in, either.
My wife descends from Tomas de Villalpando through the Santiago de Escobar family.

Dear George Fulton,
After you gave information on my Villalpando family I was so happy to finally have the connection of the Villalpando family from Jalostotitlan to nochistlan Zacatecas to Aguascalientes. I am still interested in continuing researching the Villalpando family but became distracted by other branches of my family. I recently came upon new information on a branch of villalpandos in Arandas/Ayo el Chico. I was able to connect these Villalpandos to Guanajuato Since the villalpandos from New Mexico are also connected to the Villalpandos from Guanajuato it seems that we seem to be getting closer to connecting all these Villalpandos. The Villalpando family name has also come up in my research into Toribio Hernandez Santillana's ancestors though only as living in the same region in Spain.
In my research of the branch of Villapandos from Ayo el Chico/Arandas that connects to Guanajuato, I have come up with some interesting information. Some of these married into the

Dear George,
Short Summary Review of how the Villalpandos from Aguascalientes/Zacatecas/Jalostotitlan/ Taos New Mexico/ Texas / Guanajuato/Arandas-Ayo el Chico-Tepatitlan are connected. Ther is another Villalpando branch in Mexico City.
Tomas Villalpando is married in Aguascalientes and is found later to be residing in Guanajuato. He is a contemporary of my ancestor, Gabriel Villalpando who marries Leonor Sepulveda in Aguascalientes. Their son, Jose Manuel Villalpando moves to Nochistlan, Zacatecas where he marries Josepha Beatriz Rodriguez Bajo y Ponce.
Diego Villalpando, (Gabriel's father) and Tomas are most likely related but we do not know how closely at this time. Diego
Tepatitlan and Jalostotitlan are close, about 40 minutes apart, but the two Main Villalpando branches are not closely related unless it is through the Ponce lines.
The Villalpando (Flores Villalpando) from Arandas/Ayo el Chico that I traced to Gto most likely descend from the Juan Antonio Villalpando and

Hi Rick and George
I am going through baptisms in Leon, mid to late 1600s.
I came across Marcos de Villalpando and Catalina Lopez as padrinos in 1676 for a child (padres no conocidos).
Any idea if its the same Marcos in image 31 mentioned in your post, George? Was Catalina his first wife?
This is the first time I see the name Marcos Villalpando.
I have seen Juan multiple times.
Other Villalpandos are Francisco, Nicolas, Josepha, Magdalena, and Jusepa.
Marcos and Catalina are mentioned on image 100:
