Meeting in Southern California

So who exactly is in charge of putting a meeting together in southern
California?

Has a specific date and time been set and a location chosen?

(My vote is for anywhere along the 210 between Claremont and Pasadena, and
the best day for me is either the first or second Saturday in February.)

What's the agenda?

Will there be food?

Yusuf: Names 's' and 'z'/HOHOHO

Joseph, regarding the Je. and Ma. they are abbreviations for Jose and
Maria.  I have seen Juan abbreviated as "Jn.", Encarnacion as Encn. with
the n written in smaller and above the line, etc.

The 'manitos had been in New Mexico since Onate's time there, 1598, but it
could be that Cuba and Puerto Rico were settled by the same group of Spaniards
that settled New Mexico in the 16th Century.  I agree that some of the
speech is similar between the two groups.

Odd Names

My father's name was Agapito, when he joined the Navy, everyone called
him "Joe", when he came home everyone in the family started calling
him "Daddy Joe". When I married and had a son, (my husband's family
always names the first boy after the two grandfathers)my dad did not
want his grandson named "Agapito" so we named him "D.J." after Daddy
Joe (Agapito) and my son's name is Russell D.J. My father's mother was
"Baldomera",she had other names (which no one remembers) but she went
by "Baldomera". My Mom's grandfather's name was "Pantaleon Fuentes" (
I just found out) which I am researching in Jalisco.
Feliz Navidad to all! Hilda

Soap: Historical Novels and CDs

Cool, since the subject is moving toward Soap I have a question. I make
soap, you know a little lye, a little h20 a lot of lard/fat/oil

well anyway my Tia Julia told me that Abuelita Virginia Diaz (dob: 1886
Close to Santa Maria de Los Angeles, Jalisco) used to also make soap
but she didn't know her recipe. Being that my grandmothers mom came
from the Tepetongo area but lived many years in Jalisco I'm kind of
"assuming" that is where the soap making ability/teaching came from.

So do any of you know if your grandparents or g-grandparents made soap?
If so do you all have one of their recipes? Do you recall where they
got their Lye or did they make it?

thanks,

joseph

Hi all!  I've waited a week for responses to my questions, and the vast majority prefer a meeting in the Los Angeles area.  It appears most are east of LA (I'm in Diamond Bar, myself).  February is the month most requested.  It's not too late!  If you haven't responded, please do so now, so I can count you in on the fiesta!

Now, I'm going to ask you to respond with your preference of potential dates.  I assume a Saturday would be best, and I'm avoiding the weekend before Valentine's Day, for obvious reasons.  Please select the best day.

In your response (which you can email me, so we don't bog down the group) please answer the following questions:

1.  Would you prefer February

Oral Histories

I have read lots, of messages about oral histories, here on Ranchos.
I just wanted to say, record those histories. So that they are not
lost, to the future generations.

I say this, because recently I took, on some new clients, whose
ancestry is about 80% comanche indians. With a few ancestors, who
where Mexican or spanish captives, that were captured and raised by
the comanches, during the early 1800's. All that they have to work
with, is oral histories. The comanches did not have a written
language, until they were bought, into the reservations. And when a
person dies, they don't speak the person's name again.

So, like I said. Record your oral histories, so that you posterity,
can know them, and can get to know you.

Jonathan

I have this comment, it´s anecdotic. My older brother once ask a friend to give a certain message to somebodyelse, at the end he remarked "...tell him Don Guillermo said so" I promptly said "hey! you must not refer to yourself as Don, Don is a prize you earn from been an honest man! when people start calling you "Don" you realize that you had been an honest man! It is a sign of prestige.  My father is called Don Nicolas (which make me proud), and he never refers to himself as "Don". Just a cultural bit. Have Joyeus celebrations!   LeticiaLeon

Jose,

Thanks for your generous response.  I will have to return home before I can deal with your suggestion about making a podcast.  I'm visiting my son in Texas and will return after Jan. 4 next year.  It sounds like a good idea to me.  It would give me something new to do.

My experience has been that "Je." is the abbreviation for "Jose".  "Jn." is usually the abbreviation for "Juan".  I have not seen the "Je." used interchangeably.  "Jph." is also another short form for either "Josef"  or "Joseph".

Your question about "Puente" vs. "Puentes" is trickier to answer.  I'm sure you are aware that it comes from the Latin word for bridge, ponte.  It could be a mistaken application of the linguists strategy for  forming surnames from Gothic given names by adding "es".  Examples are: alvaro > alvares (son of alvaro); benito > benites; sancho > sanchez; rodrigo > rodrigues.  The root word for Puentes is not of Gothic origin but that doesn't prevent one from treating it as such.  The

Marge, most of the names you mention sound like they came from the
classic Greek or Roman---pagan?

The way I heard it from my Jesuit priest friend is that early in the Conquest
the Catholic church decided to give  names to Indians of only known
saints or martyrs of the Church.  Of course, almost all of them were
early Roman and Greek martyrs. I think this was done because as all conquering
armies go about their business, some individuals  decide to have a little
nasty fun with names with people that do not speak their language.
I had plenty of experience with that while working for the INS. A
