I was reading through the IM of Geronimo Magdaleno and Rosa de Figueroa San Anton, 4 Oct 1690, Tangancicuaro, Mich. Geronimo Magdaleno was son of Tomas Magdaleno and Juana Chavez, and Rosa de Figueroa was daughter of Joseph Figueroa San Anton and Juana de Torres.

According to testimonies, there was concern that there might be an impediment: that Tomas Magdaleno and Joseph de Figueroa, fathers of the groom and bride, were cousins. Joseph Figueroa had told Geronimo Magdaleno that his father was the sibling of the great-grandfather of Tomas Magdaleno. Tomas Magdaleno was son of Diego Magdaleno cc Lorenza de Ovalle Liebana, and Joseph de Figueroa was son of Pedro de San Anton Figueroa cc Geronima de Liebana, so the relationship was probably through Lorenza and Geronima. Several witnesses were brought in, but no one knew what the exact relationship was, only that they always called each other “primo” and treated each other as such. In the end, it was decided that the relationship was too distant, and that a dispensa wasn’t necessary.

But of super interest, are the witnesses that Tomas Magdaleno presents: Tomas de Bejar 60, Juan de Bejar 58, and Francisco de Bejar 54. All three recognize that they are primos hermanos of Tomas Magdaleno. The Bejar boys were sons of Gregorio de Bejar y Sandoval and Maria de Liebana. The relationship is obviously through Lorenza de Ovalle Liebana and Maria de Liebana, establishing them as sisters.

From various dispensations, we know that Maria de Liebana was sister of (please correct me if I’m wrong):
- Agustin Maciel cc Ynes Rodriguez de Morfin
- Juan Asencio de Leon cc Maria de Lomelin

When her son, Gregorio de Bejar, was witness on the IM of Francisco Gomez de Lara and Juana de Liebana, daughter of Alvaro Maciel cc Ysabel de Orozco, he said that he was primo hermano de Juana, and that that Alvaro Maciel was his uncle. Alvaro Maciel was the son of Juan Asencio de Leon cc Geronima de Liebana.

All of this would imply that Lorenza de Oballe y Liebana cc Diego Magdaleno was also a daughter of Juan Asencio de Leon cc Geronima de Liebana.

I am looking for information on my Gonzalez/Loza family from Canadas de Obregon. My great grandparents are Francisco "Pancho Bigotes" Gonzalez Gama and Juana Loza Aguayo. They had 5 children together; Eduviges, Manuel, twins Agapito & Guadalupe, and Santos Gonzalez. They lived in Rancho El Cerro Viejo in 1930 and might have lived in Rancho El Pandito. I am also wondering if anyone knows how to research criminal records or newspaper records (if any at that time) from that area.

I have not been able to find any close related relatives that might still be in that area nor have I been able to find any traces or documents for some relatives after the 1940's. I would really appreciate any help! Thank you.

In searching for the origin of the last name Martin de Liebano - seen in many records in la villa de Zamora over the entire XVIII century - I found that the parents of the earliest Martin de Liebano are Juan Martin Barragan (Priest, b.1627-d.1694) and Tomasina de Liebano (d.1678. The widow of Luis del Rio, the daughter of Agustin Maciel and the granddaughter of Juan Maciel and Ana de Liebano).

Any help in confirming/denying this assertion is appreciated.

One of the earliest Martin de Liebano is Jose. Jose married his first cousin Maria Arias Maldonado.

1.1 - Jose and Maria marriage dispensation

Jose says that his illegitime (natural) father Juan Martin de Barragan was the brother of the deceased regidor Nicolas Martin Barragan and Nicolas was the father of Maria.

The 2nd. witness (Mateo Marquez de la Mora) says he knows that Jose is the son of the deceased Tomasina de Liebano and that jose was born when Tomasina was already a widow.

Tomasina was buried 17 May 1678. The record states she was single and that she was the widow of Luis del Rio.

Jose was christened 23 Apr 1665. Oddly, the record only says "hijo de Tomasina de Liebano", without the usual "y de padre no conocido".

I know the following record is not from the area that we discuss on the forum but I still have a general question for the group.

In the baptismal record for Antonia Rosa (c. 24 Feb 1788) it states: "Fueron sus Padrinos que la tubieron de Pila Juan . . ."

I am aware that "padre de pila" means godfather/godparents, but I was wondering if any of you knew of any other meaning for it. I just find it repetitive that the record would state that "X's godparents were so and so who were the godparents."

Hello everyone,

I would like to hear your thoughts from those of you whose research has taken them beyond Zacatecas and Jalisco and into Spain. I am currently researching a couple of ancestor families, Velasco and Alvarez de Asturias, and exhausted PARES research. I came across what appear to be old manuscripts written from 1695 to late 1700’s. These books have a wealth of information in regards to family trees, but they sometimes contradict each other. For example, there may be entire generations mentioned in one book and not the other. Or the parent of the same individual is completely different from one text to the other. I don’t expect you guys to read the entire chapters because there is just too much info and difficult to follow without putting in time.

I guess my only question, how reliable are these old manuscripts as a source of information and research?

Could a forum member please help me read the parents names of Francisco Suarez de Ibarra. The names are about halfway down the first page. I can make out the mother "Juana Suarez" but I cannot read the father's name. Thank you!

In my research, I have encountered a baptism record that indicates a child (possibly my 3rd G-grandfather) was abandoned at the house of a woman in Guadalajara in 1781. The record provides the child's first and middle names but omits any mention of parents or even godparents. At some later time, the child would have been given a surname. Was this name assigned by the Church? Or, if the child's father eventually stepped up and acknowledged the child as his, how would the family name be established: by Church action or by civil action? Where (if anywhere) would such action be recorded? Thanks for any assistance you can provide with my request.

Here’s my work on another family who used the Alcocer surname, appearing in Mexico near the end of the 16th century.

Brothers Alonso de Alcocer Belfelt and Juan de Colonia Belfelt were from Sevilla, Spain; from them would descend families who used the surnames Alcocer and Colonia, who lived in Mexico City, Penjamo Gto and in Patzcuaro Mich.

Alonso de Alcocer and Juan de Colonia were sons of Conrado Belfelt de Colonia and Leonor de Alcocer, of Sevilla. Leonor de Alcocer was said to descend from the “illustrious and noble house of Alcocer of Spain”; she was daughter of Alonso Sanchez de Jerez and Beatriz de Toledo, merchants, who lived on Calle de Catalanes in Sevilla. I don’t know which of them descends from the Alcocer, since I’ve done no work on that line. Maybe one of you has a lead?

Conrado Belfelt de Colonia was born in Cologne, Germany, so “Colonia” is a toponym (during his lifetime, native sevillanos would call him “el Flamenco,” thinking he was from Flanders). He was said to descend from the illustrious and noble house of “Belfelt” (also spelled “Berfelt” in some documents). I consulted with a Spanish cousin of mine, who lives in Germany, and who translates and transcribes texts and books between German and Spanish, and we think that “Belfelt” is an hispanization of “Welser” (usually spelt and pronounced “Belzer” and “Belzar,” in old Castilian texts). The Welser were a powerful family of bankers and merchants from Germany, active in Spain and its territories during the Hapsburg era. This would make sense, as Conrado Belfelt was a merchant - he sold nails and mercantile in his shop, located on Calle de Carpinteria, parish of San Salvador, in Sevilla. He was highly regarded in his community, lived in a very prominent house (with several servants), and was apparently the head of a German merchants guild; members used to “take off their hats,” when in his presence, underlining his noble pedigree. He was murdered while returning from a farm that he owned, his body found by the city walls of Sevilla. He might have died intestate, since their two sons migrated to Mexico. They also had a daughter named Beatriz or Ynes, who remained in Sevilla and who was married to a “fulano” Martinez.

I'm looking for any information about Pedro Alvarez de Navia. He was a resident of Tlaltenango about 1640-1650. The only thing that I know is that he was the "nephew" of Francisca de Molina "su tia" (Tapia or Bobadillo) wife of Antonio Vela. Both were godparents in a baptism in Tlaltenango where the relationship was stated. I want to understand how he was related to Francisca

New theory about the parents of Juan de la Torre (married to Juana de Gamboa)
I'm still working with land records. I'm submitting the following information:
This is the history of EL MESQUITE in Jerez Zacatecas. (documented)
1. Initially the land was purchased by Miguel Caldera 1592
2. Miguel Caldera trades the land with his son in law Juan de la Torre Valdes (married to Ysabel Caldera) 1596
3. Juan de la torre takes posession in 1630
4. Heirs of Juan de la torre take posession in 1644 (Sebastian, Pedro, Diego and Juana de Gamboa)

EXPLANATION:
It is clear that the first Juan de la Torre Valdes is the one married to Ysabel Caldera. In the document Juan de la Torre Valdes is refered as the "yerno" of Miguel Caldera.
Now the problem is the 34 years between the second document and the third document. It is clear that the one that takes posession in 1630 is Juan de la Torre Valdes (married to Juana de Gamboa), because on document fourth the heirs are the sons and wife of Juan de la Torre Valdes (married to Juana de Gamboa). The document doesnt explain why (or how) it took posession, but it was clearly a transfer. I believe that the reason is that JUAN DE LA TORRE VALDES (MARRIED TO JUANA DE GAMBOA) IS THE SON OF JUAN DE LA TORRE VALDES (MARRIED TO YSABEL CALDERA). This theory will explain the 34 years between the land exchange and when the second Juan de la Torre took possession. Another clue to me is that clearly the transfer wasn't a purchased (in the first purchased of the land by Miguel Caldera was even marked how much Caldera paid for the land)

Sometimes in old documents when people referred to certain family relations, they didn’t meant them to be as present day.

Example: my son could be the son-in-law
Brother was used also for brother-in-law
Nieto or nieta could be used for grandchild or great-grandchild.

Several genealogies and researchers have had headaches when Encountering some of this terms.
