Information

Hello Marge,

We are primas my descened comes from Juana Maria Chavez married to
Luis Silva in 1738 she was the daugther of Francisco Chavez-Clara de
Los Reyes.
I don't have a copy for Pedro Chavez Banuelos and Agueda Olague
marriage but I can tell you where I found that information.
Go to Heraldica y Genealogia Cabral Valdes he has a big web site on
many names from Jerez and Monte Escovedo beware that there are some
errors. When you get to the site enter
1 click on appellidos
2 click on the letter B
3 click on Banuelos
4 click on Indice de Nombres
5 scroll down to Pedro Chavez y Banuelos
6 click on Notas

You will find the information for Pedro and Agueda's marriage.
It states that there was a despenesa for this marriage in the 3rd
with 4th grado. I have the Sagrada Mitra book and it is not in there.
I did write to Mr. Cabral several months ago to see how I could
obtain a copy but he never got back to me.

Sally

Ranchos Neighbors

Hello Sally,

Being a Ranchos member I thought I would chime in. We are not related but we are neighbors. I live in San Jose which is not very far from Hollister. Maybe we can meet up one of these days and share research tips or just get to know each other.

You won't find my data on-line yet as I seriously began my research this last March on my trip to Salt Lake. In addition to my direct line research I am also doing a lot of lateral research. A couple of weeks ago I asked the group about lateral research which is what I have been doing for these last few months. It took me a while to figure out why that was so important to me and not so important to most of those in the group.

Most people in Ranchos were not born in Mexico as I was. Mostly they are descendants of Mexico but don't know many of their relations. I was born in Mexico and I do know many many living family members, the trouble is that I don't quite know how we are related, I just keep hearing that this is a relative

Introduction

Hello Arturo,

I looked up your file and perhaps some day we will make a connection.
My first Nava (gtgrandmother) was born in Juanchorrey Zac. Her father
and grandfather were all married in Juanchorrey Zac. The next 3
generations which takes me to about 1710 were from Monte Escovedo.
As for my Gonzales, Carlos and De La Torre they were from
Tepetongo,Jerez and Juanchorrey.

Sally

Sally, you're NOT going to believe this but I am looking right at a copy of a 1695 christening record of one of their kids (Teresa de Chaves). Agueda Olague was the daughter of Juana de la Torre and Miguel Olague, which I found at the familysearch.org--however, I'm not descended from Teresa, I'm directly descended from Agueda's and Pedro's son Francisco, who married Clara de los Reyes. (don't know when, had to be before 1726). Their daughter, Phelipa Gertrudis de Chaves(z) married her second cousin Cristobal Villavicencio (b. about 1732 in Jerez) at Los Chaves. Their apparent only child, Juliana del Carmen Villavicencio (isn't that a beautiful name?) was born in 1758 in Las Tetillas, Jerez.

Where did you get Agueda and Pedro's marriage info? I would love to get a copy. Marge:)

Podcast Interview Help

hmmm, I'm always wanting the best I can get. I'm not fluent in my
Spanish and believe that my stammering will distract from the quality
content that this interview can expose. I realize el Señor Gonzalez
Lopez is directing us to some other significant persons to interview
and possibly to interviewing someone in Public Relations at the AGN,
but he also seems to be quite knowledgeable and would be a good place
to start for an interview to get a researchers perspective.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone in Ranchos would like the first
opportunity to interview el Señor Gonzalez Lopez. . .yes I know this is
my project and I'm certainly not wanting to put any pressure on any of
you, but just in case someone might see the value of some inside

can't find someone here or another couple of places I'll do it myself,
but I know that it could be done much better by someone that is much
more fluent than I.

2006 Salt Lake City Trip/conference

Josie and Joseph,

Count me in, and of course it's subject to change depending on what else is going on in my life but for now I'm in. Hubby is not sure at the time whether he wants to come and if he doesn't go I'm up for sharing a room with one of the ladies of the Ranchos group. It would have to be a non-smoker as I don't smoke and can't tolerate smoke for health reasons.

I can't wait to see and meet some of these people who I feel I already know through this group. Yes I know that we're there to learn from the speakers but what I truly look forward to is meeting all or some of you. I know meeting Joseph, Kitty and Rich, Helyn and Jonathan was a real pleasure.

Thanks Josie for helping us put this together. When I went by myself last March I should have stayed at one of the hotels next to the temple. Walking by myself at night was a little scary and a little stupid on my part. The Greyhound Bus Depot is a block and a half away and there are some scary individuals. One night I was

Hi!     Yes, I also agree that Yolanda
has brought back a lot of memories for us with her nice story!  To this day
I feel bad when I step on a grave even if it is sometimes
unavoidable.  I can remember going to the cemetery with my mother when I
was VERY young and being told the same thing - "don't step on the
graves......don't make too much noise.......stop running........behave!"
while she was cleaning the tombstones of her parents.   While we never
had the "Dia de Los Muertos" celebrations where I lived when I was young in
South Texas, I have been fortunate enough to have been in Oaxaca, MX in
1997 for Dia de Los Muertos.  They do the beautiful "altares" and
sand painting on the floors of different galleries and homes, and it is all just
wonderful!  Of course, I especially enjoyed eating the wonderful "tamales
de flor de calabasa" which I had never had before.  They are
deliciosos!!!!!  Oaxaca really knows how to put on a great festival for the
deceased ancestors!

Yolanda: what a beautiful picture you painted for all of us.  It shocked my memories in a good way. Thank you.  It reminded me that my abuela Dona Lola, que en paz descance,  was also so serious about the flowers. And we had to walk such a long way from her house to the cementary. She did all the work; I guess we were there just to keep her company and carry the empty buckets back.   We were a small family so there were just two or three graves.  Two of the graves were of her sons who died as teenagers.  She sighed a lot while she washed the tombstones. And we little cousins learned respect; we would be stopped if we got too noisy or chased each other among the graves and especially if we walked on the graves. She said very little when she corrected us; she just looked at us and shook her head. That was enough.     I'm the head Tia now, so maybe its time to revive the custom in my immediate
family.  Around here  silk flowers seem to be appropriate.  Again, thanks.

I think the reason our relatives didn"t speak of the death of a child is obvious, the pain is overwhelming and in the telling come the tears. "recordar es volver a vivir"  In researching my grandfather Jose Anastacio Medina I discovered four of his siblings dying at a very young age, only he and his sister Margarita survived. Unfortunately they both lost their parents at a very young age and were sent to live with their mother's sister in Santa Rosalia de Camargo, Chihuahua.        And speaking of the dead.....
Now that El dia de los muertos is around the corner I recall my abuela materna Aurelia Yanez de Saavedra going to Ciudad Juarez and visiting El Mercado Cuahtemoc to purchase bunches of cut flowers in orange, yellow, white and brown. She would bring them back and put them in tinas full of water to keep them from wilting.  I still remember the vivid colors and the aroma of the crisantemos or "flores de muertos" as she called them.  Later in the evening we would all help

Entierros and the Mexican Mother

My grandmother went thru tough times in Totatiche, Jalisco, including
the Mexican revolution during the early 1900s and then the Cristero
Wars some years later. She used to tell us stories of many of the
hardships she and my grandfather had to endure. As my grandfather was
a professor at the catholic seminary he was considered an enemy of the
state during the Cristero Wars. Several attempts were made to kill
him. We were told that during those times they always had a guard
posted at the top of the church, day and night, whose job was to alert
the town whenever any soldiers were approaching. When that happened
they had to flee and hide in the hills for weeks at a time until the
troops left the town. My grandmother recalled how she had to give
birth in the wilderness while they were hiding and how she lost one of
her children consequently. Another one was lost by drowning in the
river. And some other of her children died by disease and lack of
medicines. Out of 18 births only 12 survived

That may be true in some environments, but maybe not in
ours.  Growing up, I recall many relatives lamenting death of children. I
still recall my grandfather lamenting the loss of three children who died in
infancy.  I recall him mentioning this on many occasions.  He's the
person who influenced me most in genealogy.  He always listed these three
children.    My father being the second to the last of ten,
always spoke of those siblings who died way before he was ever
born.  He knew their birthdates, cause of death, and death date.  I
remember him describing their deaths quite vividly.  My guess is that these
events were talked about frequently.  Otherwise how could a child recall so
much.  Does anyone else recall such experiences?  Just wonderinfg if
my family is a fluke or something?  :)
I do remember an Anglo-American friend
recounting her experience of suffering a miscarriage during her stint
as a Baptist Missionary in the jungles of Ecuador. She was shocked when

I felt an overwhelming sadness when I found my paternal
grandmother's record too.  She died related to childbirth too.  She
left 10 children from 2 months to 16.  I thought I was the only one that
could feel like that over a death that happened so long ago.  My dad was 2
yrs old when his mother died.  Of course he doesn't recall her death, but
it was a real tragedy like many that our ancesters have gone through.  Her
death record said that she had died of a heart-related condition which was
totally wrong.  I discovered that there was another woman who died the same
day:  it said that her cause of death was childbirth-related.  My
guess is that whoever made out the death record--often times scribes training to
be priests got the two mixed up.

I love death records. . .hmmm

Entierros

I just looked at my first informacion matrimonial film recently and
there is a wealth of information in those... a bit of a waste of
paper and ink, since a lot of it is the declarations of the husband
and wife to be, which are obviously dictated by the priest and then
the witnesses who attest to the verbatim same thing about the non-
consanguinity, single state of the couple, etc. However, if the
marriage record does not list parents, the informacion most
definitely will... because of the consnguinity issue.

My problem with Marcos LEMUS and Maria Barbara YBARRA is that I
cannot find their marriage record at all. I don't even know what
parrish they were married in. Almost definitely not in Colotlan,
where I would expect, because I have gone through the entire IGI
extract for the relevant film and there is nothing that remotely
approaches their names... a few Marcos with no last name but not
married to any Marias or Barbaras.

There also appears to be no baptismal record

yes good point you just never know what you're going to find. I've
received films that didn't have what they were suppose to have on them,
but that is the rare exception at least with the films I've looked at.

I've found great wealth in them, but have to agree that the

if the person died as a child then the parents. But in those uncommon
