Yes to both. Some are reluctant and some have been hostile, but those
are the minority in my experience. Maybe it has to do with my approach
or I don't know but most have been friendly. I can't judge whats in
their heart and as the majority I've spoken with have turned out not to

calling people is acceptable, but I would rather go to the pueblo and
talk to the posible primos in person. Well that is my opinion based
on my own experience. I grew up in Zacoalco and noticed that
Jaliscienses (or jalisquillos as we are sometimes called), are at
first a little bit suspicious of foreigners but as we get to know
them, we are friendly to everyone. Some americans and italians living
in the area visit my parents' restaurant every once in a while and
even though my dad does not speak any

What can be done about those that don't speak the language?  I am
such a person.  It will be difficult to research the family by making calls
etc.  Even if I visited the parish where my greatgrandfather attended, I
wouldn't be able to ask to see burial records, grave records, christenings'
etc.

Joseph,

I have files of families that I as of yet can not make a connection to my own family. Would you be interested in posting these as misc files? Let me know what you think.

This group is not only for the advanced and midlevel researcher but also
and especially for the beginner. Remember the only requirements for the
group are to do your own research and submit your genealogy. So being a
beginner and serious fits that description and you need to ask your
questions and get started. There are some very talented people in this
group and if you ask your questions I will learn along with you as they

Database: Who's Who

Thanks to everyone who entered their information. I think it will
become very benificial to all of us.

What I think is good about the database is that when you open it up,
you are given that "Search This Table" input box. If you type in a
surname or a location, it lists out all the people searching that
surname and or location. A very useful feature, be sure to try it.

The fields in the table are:
Name
Email Address    {optional}
Research Surnames    {Surnames you are researching.}
Research Location {Cities, Towns, Ranchos that your ancestors are
from.}
My Location    {Your current location - optional}

So once you are on the database page you just select the 'Add Record'
link. Enter your information. Then select the 'Add Record' button.
You should then be able to see your record in the table. The edit
link will allow you to modify your record at any time.

That should do it...

Thanks,
Angie

P.S. Isn't it kind of convenient that my record shows up first. I,

Database: Who's Who

Okay folks we have 84 members and 32 entries in the Database "Who's
Who." Angie Godina went to a lot of trouble to establish this database
and I think it will really help for a quick one stop look at who is
researching in a particular area.

So why not have a look in the Database under Who's Who and fill in your
entry. If you have trouble ask your questions If I can't answer I'm sure
our creator will.

[note: Participation in this database is not absolutely required. So
don't anybody go and get nervous about me taking out my Axe if you don't
comply!]

Since the topic of My Axe has come up. . . .

ps: I'm going to ask Angie [Angie Are you listening?] if she can make up
a form letter detailing how to enter your data into the Database. I'm
going to couple these instructions with an encouragement letter and send
it to the group on a monthly basis. that way the old vatos in the group
will constantly be pestered and the jovenes will have an opportunity to
comply

The only surname in this list that is in my family (so far) is Torres.

Yes, Joseph,

I would like it if you gave us ideas in what to say when we contact people in Mexico, since they seem to be put off if one is not entirely fluent in Castellan.  Even though I can read and understand other languages after studying them, I can't think on my feet fast enough to speak them. In Italy I spoke mostly Spanish whith a few Italian words thrown in, and they understood me perfectly well and respnded in Italian which I understood.  Same thing in France, etc.

Someone in the Jerezano group told me that the way to contact people in Jerez was to ask the radio station to make an announcement that you want to contact people who share the same ancesors.  They said that is the way things like that are usuallly done.  Perhaps the newspapers there would publish such requests too.  My problem is that I am reluctant to call or write the radio stations and newspapers for fear they won't understand me, and I wouldn't know what to say.

Thanks,

Slavery in Mexico: John Schmal

A very good written article by John Schmal.

I've been to Vera Cruz, Zacatecas, and Guanajuato, and
have seen Mexicans with negro features at these
locations. Anyway you look at it, approximately
200,000 blacks had to have been absorbed into the
population.

Gee, thanks for the glowing tribute, Helyn,

That is what genealogy is all about, I think, helping others, the old "give and thou shalt receive". Many people have helped me also down through the years, and it has kept me going.  I don't understand those that horde their information like misers.  We will get more done if we all share, no?

Yes, Jose Luis,

Please do send a scan through Ranchos so that we can all see what you are
talking about.  Even though Argentina is not in the area of the group, it
will be helpful to all of us to see what you are dealing with, especially
since we all view films with varying scripts and spelling of names.  I
have found that some of the names I deal with have been spelled with "B"
instead of "V" or "Y" instead of "LL", etc.  Priests long ago, say in the
1700's used script that is different in some letters or they tended to use the
Latin Joseph and Carmel instead of Jose and Carmen.

I have been looking up the ethnic history of Argentina, and
