El Parroco

I know that Parroco means "Parishioner" but I don't know in what context it is written.

In a baptismal record, in a film for Tlaltenango, Zac,  the birth place for the ancestor was listed as "El Parroco". Does anyone know where this place may have been? Gracias, Helyn

Hispanic Clergy Could be in the Running

April 4, 2005

In a nod to the emergence of Catholics from Latin America, several
prominent Latin American cardinals have been cited as possible
contenders for the papacy.

Most are theologically conservative but socially liberal, according to
Christie Vila, an expert on Catholicism in Latin America and a
researcher at the University of Miami.

"It would be exciting to have a Latin American pope because the church
will soon be more from the Southern Hemisphere than from the Northern
Hemisphere," Vila said.

Prominent Latin American contenders for the papacy include:

Theologically conservative, but active in confronting poverty and other
social ills, the Franciscan archbishop of San Paulo is considered one of
the leading Latin American candidates. Hummes, 70, who once supported a

The Cristero Rebellion

Hello Felipe and Rancheros,  :)

      My dad's family was mainly
from Jalostotitlan, and my mother's family was from Jalostotitlan & San Juan
de los Lagos.  My maternal grandmother was a Padilla like just about
everyone in San Juan.  Her family was from the following ranchos:
Potrero de en Medio, El Tule, La Estancia Vieja, etc.,  I still need to do
more research.
I used to visit my maternal grandparents
every 5 years, and we would stay with them in San Juan.  My grandparent's
"city" home was just about 3 blocks from the Basilica--Calle
Primavera.  I have many fond memories.  The cantor at the Basilica is
a relative, and my godmother also lives near the Centro Camionera--Bus
Station.
    Everyone's relative's memories of the
Cristiada have been interesting.  My parents were very young, but also have
memories of the event.  On my last visit to Los Altos almost 3 years ago,
my father pointed out two very tall hills which surrounded his family
ranch.  He told me

The Cristero Rebellion

Hi all.
No wonder I can't find my grandfather's and great-grandfather's' birth, and marriage' records.
I suspected as such, that the rebellion had not only destroyed livestock, and taken , and burned land, but had also most likely destroyed records.
I can't find anything in the LDS archives, concerning them.
Once, many years ago, I thought I had happened on a micro- film, but the contents were a bit vague, and conflicting, as to my grandfather's parent's names.
Now I know for sure. What a horrid time that must've been, to have made my grand-father trek thousands of miles to a copper mining town in Arizona, and never look back.
A sad chapter in the hard-working and proud lives of some of the most valient, resourceful, and hard-working ranchers in Mexico.
Thanks.
Armando Lopez.

Hi Steven,

I didn't receive the power point presentation but I'm very interested in having a copy.  I don't know know how big the file is but that could be the reason.  I definitely would like to have a copy.  How big is the file?.  If it is too big, perhaps you  zip it or could you put it on CD and mail it?    I'm also interested in having a copy of your thesis.

I've  always been interested in La Revolucion Cristera.   You see,  I'm from San Juan de los Lagos, Jalisco,  and Los Altos de Jalisco was where many if not the most important battles took place.  My father was just small boy during that war and when I was young growing up in Mexico, he always used to talk to us about how his father yelled at the soldiers "Viva Cristo Rey" when the soldiers were coming into town and my grandmother used to get all scared.  My mother also talks about how during  "La Concentracion"  (this is the time during La Revolucion Cristera when all young adults and men were required to report to the

Joseph,

Thank you so much for the link to the site about the poet nun, and also for the link to the history of Zacatecas and Aguascalientes.  I recognized some of the surnames as being in my father's lines.

Also, it seems like everyone wants to read Steven's thesis on the Cristero Rebellion.  However,  I will miss out on that since my computer cannot receive large files.  I am able to view the trees in your files, so is there some reason that the thesis couldn't be uploaded into the groups files?

Thanks again,

FYI:

I just finished watching this good movie. Blockbuster has it in its archives: "I, Worst of All."  Its the story of Juana Ines de la Cruz. She was a Nun Poet from the 17th century born close to Mexico City. She was a genius.

The Cristero Rebellion

Steve,
Hola.
My grandfather Aureliano Lopez came to the U.S. because of the Crsitero Rebellion.
He never ever wanted to return to Mexico after that.
He brought his whole family from Los Altos.
Now I know why he always had a bitterness toward ever setting foot in Mexico, again.
To this day he remains in Los Angeles w/the rest of the family.
He worked in the copper mines of Jerome , Arizona, in the 30's, a ghost town now.
I always wondered, even as a little kid, why he would never come down to San Diego, or Tijuana, to visit my father, and us.
I've recently read about the Cristeros, in my genealogical searches.
I know my ancestors had a ranch in Jalisco., so I figured, why would they have moved?
Sincerely,
Armando Lopez.
Adios por ahora.

When I completed my Bachelor of Arts degree in 2001, I did my History major thesis on the Cristero Rebellion.  I have the actual 30 page thesis with bibliography.  If anyone is interested, I can email it to them.  I do not mind.

Two years later, in May 2003, I prepared a Powerpoint presentation which I am now transmitting.  Hopefully, it'll inform and educate everyone as to what the Cristiada was, and who much it affected Mexico.

If there are any more questions, comments, or concerns regarding this topic, please let me know.  I would be quite interested in reading these.
