Mis ancestros de los Altos.

Alicia,

I agree. This really must be an exciting finding for Steven.
I've also wondered how many in the Ranchos group have done a DNA
study (either Y-DNA or mtDNA) or are considering doing one?

What is gradually showing up by those who have done genetic testing
is that most of us with Mexican roots have a European paternal
lineage and a Native American maternal ancestry.

Saludos
Victor

Hello Emilie,

I too have my keyboard configured for International English. As you

You asked me for a list of places in Zacatecas where my research for my Olague anetecedents has led me:

My Olague-Tinajero-Suriano [Soriano]-Flores-Rodriguez originated in Jerez or Tepetongo.  I have not found any mention of any Ranchos or other designated places in the vicinity of Jerez or Tepetongo.

I will update my trees in WorldConnect for both my Olagues and for my husband's Garcia-Cevantes when I get more information.  So I ask those interested to again check the links in my folder in a few weeks.

Problem

I would like to thank the people who took the time to answer my plea
for help. I believe I found a solution to the problem, thanks to
Aajay
suggestions. I was able to export the file with the ".ged" file
extension. When I imported it back, it went to my Ancestry Family

I went back to the PAF program and was not sucessful in my attempts

I don't have a disk for the PAF program. It was downloaded from the

program again or to stick with the old one (AFT).

Thank you again everybody.

Thank you Joseph.

PAF Help Needed!!!

John,

It sounds like your genealogy file might be set to read-only. If you
open up My Computer (or Windows Explorer) look in the folder where
you have your genealogy file stored. The file will have a .PAF
extension. Right-click on the file, select properties and see if the
attribute read-only at the bottom is checked. If it is, then uncheck
it and click OK. That should reset your genealogy database to
read/write. It doesn't sound like the PAF program is the culprit,
but your genealogy database is. To test my theory you could create a
brand new genealogy database and see if you can read and write to
it. If you can, then my theory is correct. If not, email and I'll
help you troubleshoot it.

Spanish Language Characters

There is an easier way to do Spanish Language characters on the computer (instead of remembering 3-digit numbers for each character).  I got the following from someone called "Jerezano" at MexConnect.com.

Click on MY COMPUTER, CONTROL PANEL, KEYBOARD, LANGUAGE (Make sure you are on English (United States).    Choose and click on PROPERTIES.  On the Keyboard dialog that comes up, click on the down arrow for KEYBOARD LAYOUT.  Look for and choose UNITED STATES INTERNATIONAL. Then click OK on each succeeding box as it comes up and back out to the Desktop.

You will then be ready to type your Spansh characters (accents, tildes, etc.)  Hold down the ALT that is to the right of the space bar and at the same time hit your key:  Press the right ALT and hold it while hitting a,e, i, o, u, n, etc.

One warning:  Your type font needs to have the accented characters.  Korinthia is a good one.  To check this, go to Character Map, select the font you normally use and check to make sure it has

Escribir en Español/Writing in Spanish

Hi Alicia:

I am glad to see that someone else is iterested
in writing Spanish correctly.  Your spanish sounds and looks
perfect! I don't see anything wrong with it.  It isn't easy, Spanish
is a very difficult language specially when it comes to conjugating verbs.
I don't consider myself an expert.
I had most of my schooling here, in
California, and never had a formal class in Spanish. I did live in Guaymas,
Sonora, Mexico for 10 years and had the opportunity to learn by osmosis and
immersion.  I came from a family where Spanish was spoken every day.
My parents insisted that we learn the proper use and not to fall for the
"Spanglish" that we encounter everyday.  We are attempting the same
with our grankids but it is an uphill battle...

There is a web site that I sometimes use whenever
I have a problem with a word: http://tradu.scig.uniovi.es/conjuga.html
It is a web site for the Diccionario de
Español.  It is  provided by the  University of Oviedo, in Spain.

John,

Thanks for that great tip!  Muchas Gracias por la leccion acerca de la letra ñ.

What other secrets are there waiting to be discovered with respect to the correct punctuation in Spanish. I'm sure there are other short cuts to grammar and punctuation. Where can we go to find this information on the net. A que sitio nos puedes enviar para obtener esa informacion en el internet?

I thank you for your patience with those of us who are Spanish writing challenged and for your willingness to come forward and assist us.

Genealogies Added To Links

When I add genealogies to the "Links" I have no way of making an
announcment other than sending out an email.

Emilie Garcia (auntyemfaustus@...) has just submitted her
Garcia-Cervantes and Francisco Olague links on World Connect in
Rootsweb. Go to the links area and click on her folder and see her
links.

Emilie can you send me a complete list of the places in Jalisco or
Zacatecas that you are doing research. I saw Encarnacion de Diaz but I
need any other places or rancho names you have and I'll add them to
your folder description.

Have you been able to get into the "files" and "links" yet? Do you have
a Yahoo ID and Password?

let me know if I can help with this.

O.K. Joseph here it comes:

I noticed that lot of people don't know that
there is a way to type the letter "ñ  on their computers,  they always
use the letter "n" . It makes a whole lot of difference when they use "n"
instead of  "ñ"  with horrendous results .  In the case
where they want to say years = años, they say: anos, which you probably already
know that it means anus.
To type the letter  "ñ"  you press the
"Alt" key and while you hold it pressed you type the number 164 on the
keypad.  The "ñ"  will appear on the screen as soon as you release the
"Alt" key.  If you need it in upper case the number to use is
165.
You might want to pass this bit of information to
the rest of the members, Iam almost sure that there are a lot of them that don't
know it..

Genealogia Diaz del Castillo/Martin del Campo

Hi, Joseph,

Re PAF and Family Tree Online at Ancestry.com:

PAF is a great program if your computer has the room for it.  It makes great charts, trees, etc.  The Family History Centers can download it to your computer or a disc or sell you the program and teach you how to use it.  I don't have room for it on my computer, but I will get that when I get a new computer.  Right now I use the Online Family Tree program on Ancestry.com.

I think I understood Francisco Martin about his not seeing his trees in the format you've been getting from those who have Family Tree on their computers.  When I want to forward a tree to someone, I go to WorldConnect and find my tree, then I click on "Ahnentafal"  (German word for Pedigree) and it brings up my tree in the Generation 1, Generation 2, etc format that people have been sending to you.

I still have to e-mail you my "Ahnetafal" pedigrees.  I was going to wait until I updated them, but I don't seem to get around to it.  So I might as

I am confident that the answer to this question is yes. Having said that
I'm not sure what Mexico's rules are with regards to when that info
becomes public. I've seen census books available and I'll try to find
info about these books. I think they are generic in nature just giving
