Joseph,
This group is a familia, your thoughts about expanding it could prove to be fruitful but it would change the focus.  Why not keep the  group as is and encourage anyone interested in researching other states to join Jonathan's mexicanfhr group.
I joined the group and would love to see more input in the mexicanfhr group, I just sent in about 9 files for my family in Chihuahua and Durango and have more to submit. So come join us!

Congratulations, Joseph, on breaking through your brick wall. It
gives me hope that I can also break some brick walls of my own!

Also, I sympathize with you being "cansado" from all you duties and
chores as a group admnistrator. You seem to have answered your own
questions from a previous message.

Easy does it!

I agree that we should not expand. If anyone needs something more than this group they have options.  (1)leave the group, (2) Start their own group, (3) Join Jonathan's Group. There are probably many other options not mentioned here but for now my vote is to stay as is.

Joseph,

I have always been a little puzzled as to why San Luis
Potosi is not part of Ranchos. Seems to me it should since
part of San Luis Potosi at one time used to part of the
region of Zacatecas. One of my greatgrandfathers was born

in SLP when part of it belonged to the region of Zacatecas.
By the way, he called himself Zacatecano. The Zavalas have

always been from Zacatecas.

It seems to me that we need a good history lesson as to
where the boundaries were for the 1800s and before, where
most of us are going with our genealogy. The boundaries for
the reinos changed according to the person reporting the
information.

I think we need to define the Ranchos area of coverage to
cover the actual physical boundaries of where Jalisco,
Zacateacas and Aguascalientes really were according to the

Enter your vote today!  A new poll has been created for
the

From time to time people not from our geographical
area express intereste in Ranchos. Here is my answer:

maybe there is a
misunderstanding. we are focused on the states of Jalisco, Zacatecas, and

Now if you "THINK" that you might have ties to this area then I'll subscribe you
for a 1 year temporary membership that we'll reconsider renewing next year
depending on how much you've discovered about your Jalisco, Zacatecas and/or
Aguascalientes roots or should I say tried to discover.

is this what
you'd like to do?

Do you agree with this? Or should I make special

New poll for ranchos

Genealogy is hard work and I can't imagine a serious researcher
wanting to join this group without being willing to share what their
research has shown in the migration of families in Mexico. Joseph
has made it a rule for joining this group, the willingness to share
research.

I'm truly learning as I go in the genealogy but have learned that
our lines did not originally come from Jalisco, Zacatecas or
Guanajuato, they had to come from someplace else before that since
they followed established roads for migration after the soldiers
made them safe to establish new pueblos, towns and states. Or some
of us had ancestors who were soldiers and they were moved from place
to place. I always said my Gutierrez and Mendez families was from
Jalisco but I've discovered they arrived in Jalisco about 1775 from
Michoacan and were only in Michoacan for about 50 years so they had
to come from someplace else before that! Even though my focus is
still in the states we are grouped together

Joseph,
    I know
that I'm biased, but I'd like to keep it to the states: Jalisco, Aguascalientes
& Zacatecas (Nueva Galicia), but I can also just delete the info from the
states I'm not interested in.  My ancestors seem to stay in the same
place...

New poll for ranchos

Joseph,

This is a though one. I'm not deciding yet how to vote but I just
want to add a comment.

I understand how certain people might want to join the group just to
see what they can get out from it without making any contribution in
return, or extract information for non-genealogical purposes. This is
not acceptable.

However, I'm sure there must be at least a few good researchers and
genealogist who, although not directly rooted in the Ranchos
geographical area, can act as bridges to other genealogical groups in
Mexico, US, Iberia, the Caribean, etc. I for one have membership and
visit several groups even in places where I still haven't found any
ancestors. I have directed to this group a few persons who I knew
were interested in the Rancho's region but were unaware of this
group's existence.

Maybe the solution isnt'a yes-no, let-them-all-in / keep-them-all-out
situation. How about adding another level or layer of protection to
the files or information that we want to

Who's Who New Column

Joseph,
In regards to your question for another column would it not be possible to also include your area of research in the same column we now have for areas or towns of research. All members in this group are well aware that Ranchos is for the three states and any direct communication regarding research or data from other areas could be directed to the interested party off line. in this way you would not have to make any database changes, just a thought.

This group is so well behaved and by and large follows rules very well.
I know it sounds as if I'm talking about children and not adults but some children are better mannered than some adults. That's one of the endearing qualities of this group, it's adherence to the rules and criteria for membership, it's ethics, integrity and respect for all members.

Who's Who New Column

I'm wondering if everyone is participating in the who's who database? if
not please go there now and fill your very detailed info in. But I'm
also wondering if those that are more database savy can answer this. .
.is there room for another catagory without having to redo the whole thing?

Reason I'm asking is that recent events have pointed out that members
should have a place where they can let other members know what areas
outside of the Ranchos Target area they are researching. So If i find
that so and so is searching in Juarez, Chihuahua for Perez well then
I'll fire off a PRIVATE email to so and so telling them about all my
Perez from there.

So what do you think. . .I think you see where I'm going, but no I'm
very very resistent to opening the group up to wholesale research for
the whole world. We are and will remain focused on Jalisco, Zacatecas
and Aguascalientes. But having said that why not lets groom other
group-masters to start their own group for some of
