Joseph,
If all are in agreement I think this is a good idea. You can count me for a $25 pledge.

Br. Pbro. Diego Gonzalez de Hermosillo was in charge of
the Church ( Templo San Jose) in Teocaltiche, Jal. But my guess is that he was either a son or a brother of my ggggg granfather. I'll probably find out later. I am related to Santo Toribio Romo. Third cousin, once removed. Have you ever heard of this Saint? Santo Toribio Romo was from Santa Ana, Jalisco, just outside of Jalos. They have just placed some of his relics in the new (remodeled) Cathedral in Sacramento! He is the patron saint of the immigrants. By the way...Last week I was able to trace my ancestry
all the way back to about 1550 !!! 11 generations and Iam still in Jalostotitlan! but I hit the wall...I guess Iam going to have to start looking in a different direction now. Thank you for your help Emilie.

John, According to Google "Br. Pbro." means Bachiller Presbitero. You had a priest as an ancestor? Or was he a professor of some kind? Emilie Garcia Port Orchard, WA ---

While digging my roots I came across this: " Br. Pbro. Diego Gonzalez de Hermosillo. " I know what Pbro. means: Presbitero. But what is the Br. stands for? I know it is a religious title. Is there any member out there that has any idea or can suggest a resource to look it up? Any help will be greatly appreciated. The subject was my gggggg Grandfather from Jalostotitlan, Jalisco.

On thing I've noticed since this group was
started and that is if there is ever a lack of participation all I have to do is say anything at all about Comida and watch out I'm about stampeded with people rushing to send messages. I guess I said all that only to say that I need some content for my Nuestra Familia Unida podcast project "Comida" section. Does anyone here feel comfortable working with me to create an audio file on some aspect of Historical Mexican Food? It could be a reading from a book, it could be reading some short oral history of your family related to some food and then the recipe. It could be a talk about how the food preparation was an integral part of your families history. I think you all get my point. Let me know if anyone is interested. . .I'll call you and we can discuss it further off the list. the list will be able to hear the finished product at the http://nuestrafamiliaunida.com/podcast/comida.html page. also I'm still looking for contributors for the |

Wow, you guys are great.
thanks for the support on this. I guess we need to open the floor up to nominations for at least two other members of the committee. I've already nominated Kitty Cortez and we need at least 2 more nominations (no ties). Just because someone is nominated doesn't mean that person has to accept the nomination. Sounded to me like Kitty accepted the nomination. Once we get those nominated all lined up I think we should have a "vote" and elect them into the committee. I can set this up through the Poll area. Seems like we shouldn't be too concerned with a majority at first since it is hard to get folks from Ranchos to vote/poll on things. But the past polls have indicated that around 20 people vote depending on the subject. So what would be a good amount of votes to be elected into the committee? How about 10 votes? the committee could then change this later. Each person voting/polling would be able to vote for more than one choice. Anyone else think of some |

Suave Arturo, Joseph et al: I have been working on a lumber case for the past four years and know way more that I ever cared to know about species of trees, so when I saw your question I got curious. I know from having been in Jalisco that the mountainous areas are a mix of coniferous and deciduous forests, and that the plains are grasslands but this gives all of the details of the extent of those ecoregions as well as the actual species that grow there. I am just delighted to have enough interest. I think we should time

Ed/Alberto: As an aside, the Mexican presidential mansion in Chapultepec is called "Los Pinos" I too recall reading about the heavy logging that occured in the Sierra de Mixton near Tlaltenango early on and I know that today this is one of the central problems that the Wirrarika (Huichol) have with incursion on their lands... illegal logging. The Sierra Huichol is perhaps one of the few dense forests left in the area... largely because of inaccessability. Also, as another aside... the currently mainstream reason for the collpse of Maya civilaztion is deforestation. The population had grown so dense that vast parts of the Yucatan and Guatemala were cleared for agriculture leading to all sorts of ecological problems which eventually led to catastrophe and the abandonment of the cities. So the Spanish were not the only ones who were careless with natural resources. The U.S. lumber industry is heavily pushing U.S.-style residential construction in Mexico in hopes that it

Arturo, In my readings on Mexico, I have been impressed with the deforestation of the ranchos areas and farther north. All of this excessive deforestation may partly account for the present "low yield" nature of the land, not that it was real good anyway. It reminds me of the cedars of Lebanon, which used to cover Lebanon. Now Lebanon has nothing to speak of since most, if not all, of the trees were used in various projects, including ship- building, centuries ago. Any comments? Our Spanish ancestors had only one thing in mind sometimes: gold. Unfortunately, the environmental impact may have been huge and deleterious. Oh yeah, our Spanish ancestors had another thing on their mind: women.
