I would like to clarify that Antonio De la Cadena does not descend from the Gutierrez Cavalleria. He descends from the Cavalleria family, but does not have Gutierrez in his last name. His Cavalleria ancestors are a couple of generations back. Antonio De Saavedra Guzman and his wife were second cousins through their Estrada lines, and distant cousins through their Cavalleria lines.

Arias De Saavedra descent throughJosefa Perez Maldonado who married Manuel Lomelin and left many descendants in Los Altos De Villanueva, Nueva Galicia [presently known as Los Altos De Jalisco, Jalisco]. The first section that was compiled by Jose De Meza. This tree is based on “el ARBOL GENEALOGICO Y BLASONES DE LA ILUSTRE CASA DE SAAVEDRA HASTA DON FERNAN DE SAAVEDRA, POR RODRIGO MENDEZ SILVA, CORONISTA GENERAL DE SU MAGESTAD CATOLICA EN ESTOS REINOS DE ESPAÑA, Y MINISTRO DEL SUPREMO CONSEJO DE CASTILLA, 25.9.1653”. I compiled the second section of this line staring from (27.)

Josefa Perez Maldonado is my and my wife’s tenth great-grandmother. This line that I show here goes to my wife’s grandfather, Francisco A. Tostado y Casillas

I still need to review every step to confirm this work. I added a correction as to the ancestry of the Martel as the evidence points not to French royalty as many genealogists claim, but to French Jewish ancestry.

Many years ago a drawing was being passed around as the image of Martin Casillas “el Alarife”. It turns out that the image was really of another one of my ancestors Antonio Saavedra Guzman, an historian and poet. Antonio Saavedra Guzman is the maternal grandfather of Josefa and Angela Perez Maldonado.

I descend from Josefa Perez Maldonado and Manuel Lomelin. Josefa Perez Maldonado is the daughter of Isabel Saavedra Monroy and ? Pérez Maldonado. In the record that I show here it lists her father as Luis Perez Maldonado. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-6D92-M7?i=1069&cc=1874…

I believe that some of the confusion regarding whether the father’s name is Luis or Diego is that there were two “Luis Perez Maldonado”, father and son, and the elder Luis is the son of a Diego Perez Maldonado.

Isabel Saavedra y Monroy is the daughter of Juan Saavedra Guzman who descends from Alonso Estrada el tesorero, (who claimed to be son of King Ferdinand II el catolico) through two of his daughters as again we find endogamy in the family. Juan Saavedra Guzman also descends from King Pedro “el cruel” Rey De Castilla.

There is also some confusion over Isabel Saavedra y Monroy’s mother as her father was married twice. I am unsure as to which wife is her mother though I suspect

Thank you so much for sharing so much info. I see now that the orden of Juan Perez Maldonado offers so much information including his baptismal record.

My mom is in Mexico at the moment and I gave her a list of books to find for me, with this info you have so kindly provided I know where to focus my research for now :)

On another note, I was going through the padron from Jalostotitlan offered in the book Historia de Nuestra Senora de San Juan Los Lagos and this is further proof to me than Angela, Juan & Josepha were siblings, since Angela is listed with her husband Bernabe Martin (del Campo) living with Do Perez Maldonado and Isabel de Saavedra, below are Manuel de Lomelin & Josepha Perez I will attach it to a new post, since I can't seem to do it here.

Angela Perez Maldonado's daughter Isabel was baptized by Juan Perez Maldonado in Ameca in 1702 (family search ID MTCX-G3P) and the baptismal records names her mother's name is Angela Garcia Maldonado, as well as the padron. However

Sorry, that's as much as I could make out. I hope this helps. Maybe someone else can fill in the blanks.

Slavery in Tlaltenango

I recently came across this Baptism entry in which the child is mentioned to be slave of Balthazar Correa.

In general, from my own experience reading through the Tlaltenango films, I've seen far more people classified as mulatos libres than esclavos. But they do exist.

Comment

Thank you so much for this blog, it was a great blog for historical information. A lot of my ancestors on my mothers side are named in this blog and I had no clue until I read it. Is this a blog only or was this printed into a book as well? I would love to read more about Los Altos Jalisco, do you know if there are books or blogs with this information? I notice mention of “el rancho viejo” in the blog and on my fathers side, my 5x great grandfather was from there Rafael Hernández Montes but he was a mulato and was married to María Josefa Hernández Mesa mulata of Tarimoro. On my fathers side a lot of my ancestors were from Tarimoro and I know there was an hacienda there but can’t find much information about the hacienda and the owners.

Thank you,
Esther

Depending upon what year it was corresponding to the record you submitted, the Balthazar Correa who is named might very well be my Grandmother's first husband's Great Great Grandfather whose name was Miguel Castañeda Correa. Balthazar de los Reyes Correa was married to Maria Magdalena de Avila in Tlaltenango in 1737. I made the following note taken from a baptism where they are referred to as a couple: "Don Baltazar Correa and his wife Doña Maria Magdalena de Avila are named in the baptism of their grandson Lugardo Gonzalez Correa in Tapias, Zacatecas, close to Atolinga, Zacatecas" . Regardless if this is the same Balthazar Correa, slavery as unfortunate as it may be was not uncommon in the region. You'll find many of us share ancestors in the Tlaltenango region who were slaveowners. And you'll also find many who will trace their roots to slaves and thus are part of our heritage.

Other references to slaves are found in many of the older Tlaltenango census lists as well.

Comment

As I mentioned there are several of us that I am aware from this region whose descendants owned slaves, my own included. And I have at least one descendant who was identified as a free slave leading to Tlaltenango from Guadalajara in about the year 1700. May I say my reply to your question regarding the existence of slavery in this region was to inform that the practice was a historical reality. I also realize many, especially those new to genealogy of relatives in Mexico are not aware that slavery existed there.

I am hoping you understand that providing information I have to identify families who owned slaves in my opinion would serve no good purpose and whose motives could easily and understandably be misinterpreted.

Respectfully submitted

Comment

I sincerely believe that not providing information to identify families who owned slaves in the region is worst than identifying them.

We need to come to terms with our past even if that involves slavery. Slaves were people who found themselves de humanized as property, burying that in the past will only make the injustice greater.

Comment

i agree. i always identify slave owning families and post the information on my tree whether i'm related to them or not. knowing who the slave owning families are helps others in their search for ancestors. there's no logical reason for not providing the information.

About dispensa

When a marriage record say this "Ambos dispensados por el Sr. Provisor en este Obispado en la nominacion conciliar" Does it mean that there is a marriage dispensation?

Comment

Yes, there should be a marriage dispensation on record.

I wish you luck finding it. Sometimes it takes a long time to track down such records. In this case it states that the Sr Provisor approved the dispensation so I would first check the city where the bishop resided.

Hi Vanessa,

At WikiTree each person's profile includes "Sources", e.g.:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hurtado_de_Mendoza-10

You can find in "Sources" the record of his defunction and a Dispensa showing some blood relationships.

Checking the sources on each profile you can form an opinion about how trustworthy the family tree could be.

Profiles and sources are entered by volunteers as the result of their own resarch.

García Family, Teocaltiche, JAL

I was hoping that someone within this community may have some more information on this family pre-1850s.

There is a good chance this is the chiristening record of Pedro:

The records states hijo legitimo by mistake. There are no father or paternal grandparents listed.

Comment

Thanks so much! That's the best discovery I've had for getting further information on Pedro García.

The birthdate is a bit off from what I found in his marriage record... He was married on 19 November 1834, with his age listed as 22, which would make is birth year 1812 - but it says 1810 here, is it common for the age on the marriage record to be a bit off/an error?

Comment

Is there any reason a different, new last name (Nolasco) would have popped up here? In all of his children's records he is listed as Pedro Garcia (even hough he was hijo natural) and on the baptism as de La Paz.

Comment

Thanks for the tips.

I went page by page and found the marriage record for Pedro García and Maria Refugio Aguilera, and found out Pedro was "hijo natural" not "hijo legitimo" of Lorenzo García. Perhaps this is one reason why it's been so difficult to find records?

Thanks!

Hijos Naturals are harder for two main reasons:

1. Usually, baptism records of Hijos Naturals do not list the names of the grandparents, while most baptism records of legitimate children. In some cases, even the father isn't listed.

2. No marriage record. If I child is a Hijo Natural, then there's no marriage record. Marriage records list the name of the bride and groom and where they were born or are living at.

Comment

Not all of the Teocaltiche church records (baptisms and marriages) have been extracted. You can check which ones by looking up Teocaltiche in the Family Search catalog. If these films cover a critical time period in your research you will need to look at these films page by page. They are, however, all online at Family Search.
